Consumers' perception of food traceability in Europe AgEcon

Food traceability has become mandatory since 1st January 2005 in the European Union. Traceability of products and activities in the supply chain has become a new factor of competitiveness in agribusiness and is deemed to be an important criterion of perception of food product quality and safety for consumers. This paper has three objectives: i) to get a deeper understanding of the role of the "ability-to- trace" in consumer decision- making process with respect to food, ii) to measure consumers' acceptability for food traceability, iii) to check the differences of these matters across twelve European countries in order to highlight any specificity. Consumer Support for Food Tracing with RFID Technology AgEcon

Foodborne illness continues to be a significant problem and food traceability may help reduce the number and severity of outbreaks. One technology that could improve food tracing is radio frequency identification tags or RFID. However, some consumers may oppose the use of this technology because of its potential for reducing personal privacy. A survey of consumers asked about their support for an RFID tracing system for produce and for meat. Results suggest that some consumer privacy attitudes and privacy behaviors were negatively related to support for RFID tracing. A Principal-Agent Model for Investigating Traceability Systems Incentives on Food Safety AgEcon

This article investigates the effects of contingent payments and a traceability system's expected traceback rate of success on the food safety effort exerted by raw material suppliers. This sheds light on when contingent payments and the reliability of a traceability system are substitutes and complements to each other in terms of inducing raw material suppliers to exert higher food safety effort. In addition, the effect of higher penalties and costs of food safety crisis on the effort to be induced by buyers (principal) on suppliers (agents) is investigated under a symmetric information setting.
