A DISCRETE STOCHASTIC MODEL TO DETERMINE FOOD QUALITY BY USING SIMULATION: A STRAWBERRY CASE STUDY REA
González-Hernández,Isidro J.; Granillo-Macías,Rafael; Rondero-Guerrero,Carlos; Martínez-Flores,José L..
ABSTRACT The agri-food supply chain (AFSC) sets a series of challenges in the production, storage, distribution, and transportation processes, as the market's requirements for fresh food combine food quality and safety attributes. This research suggests a discrete event modeling to study the behavior of food quality in all supply chains (SCs) in terms of temperature and time variables in a stochastic manner. The ProModel software was used to simulate strawberry quality in the SC, considering a distribution route to export the fruit from Mexico to the United States. The suggested model together with a computer simulation analyzes the fruit quality from two perspectives: with and without a cold chain (CC). The obtained results revealed that in the case of CC...

Alimentation expérimentale de l'huître Crassostrea gigas à l'aide de navicules bleus Haslea ostrearia (Simonsen) de différentes tailles ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Robert, Jean-michel.
The influence on the feeding physiology (clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption) of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas of low concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM ranging from 2 to 20 mg.l-l) and high food quality (mean organic fraction =54 %) was studied in the laboratory. Experimental diets were made up with three strains of the "blue diatom" Haslea ostrearia, which is responsible of the greening of oyster-ponds. The strains were characterized by different sizes (48, 65 and 98 µm respectively) but possessed the same density and biochemical composition. Clearance rate was found constant at 2.2 1.h(-l).g-l dry weight and therefore was not influenced by increasing seston load. Pseudofaeces production was observed for SPM...

Agronomic biofortification of common bean grain with zinc PAB
Cambraia,Thaís Lopes Leal; Fontes,Renildes Lúcio Ferreira; Vergütz,Leonardus; Vieira,Rogério Faria; Neves,Júlio César Lima; Corrêa Netto,Pedro Silva; Dias,Raphael Felipe Nascimento.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the split and combinated application of foliar zinc (ZnF) + soil Zn (ZnS) on Zn concentration in the grains (ZnCG) of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse during two seasons. In the first experiment, two common bean cultivars received six ZnF rates (0, 120, 240, 480, 720, or 1,200 g ha-1), with split applications at the R5, R7, and R8, or R7 and R8, or R8 plant stages. In the second experiment, one cultivar received three ZnS rates (0, 5, or 10 kg ha-1) combined with ZnF rates (0, 1, 1.5, 3, 6, or 10 kg ha-1). In the first experiment, with the ZnF increment, ZnCG increased linearly from 15.3 to 20.7 mg kg-1. ZnF splitting did not affect ZnCG....

The Food Retail Revolution in Poor Countries: Is It Coming or Is It Over?: Evidence From Madagascar AgEcon
Minten, Bart.
Global retail chains are becoming increasingly dominant in the global food trade and their rise leads to dramatic impacts on agricultural supply chains and on small producers. However, the prospects and impacts of a food retail revolution in poor countries are not yet well understood. Here, we examine this question in Madagascar, a poor but stable country where global retailers have been present for over a decade. Our survey and analysis finds that while global retail chains sell better quality food, their prices are 40 to 90% higher, ceteris paribus, than those seen in traditional retail markets. In poor settings, characterized by high food price elasticities, a lack of willingness to pay for quality, and small retail margins, supermarkets appear to set...

Food Quality Standards in Equilibrium Models: A Discussion of Current Modeling Approaches AgEcon
Nolte, Stephan; Rau, Marie-Luise.
Throughout recent year food quality standards have become a ubiquitous phenomenon that nationally and globally influences agri-food markets. With equilibrium models commonly used in the quantitative analysis of market and trade effects, we review possible approaches to modeling standards existent in the literature, elaborate the reasoning behind them and discuss their suitability to reflect "real world" situations. While the modeling approaches identified may respectively depict a specific situation, they may not be appropriate in others. That is they capture certain effects of standards only. With increasing ability to account for the various effects of standards, the modeling approaches become more complex and the data requirements increase.

Fragmenting markets and quality change in New Zealand foods: empirical analysis with a Rotterdam model AgEcon
Khaled, Mohammed; McWha, Vhari; Lattimore, Ralph G..
Very little is known about changes in the demand characteristics of food in New Zealand. As far as we can determine, there has never been a complete disaggregated food demand model estimated for New Zealand. The object of this paper is to update these estimates using more recent data to see whether there are grounds for believing that the structural changes that occurred primarily during the last two decades are having effects on the magnitude of food demand elasticities in New Zealand. To this end, a Rotterdam food demand system is estimated using time series data. The results indicate that over the last 20 years, household consumption has increased for fruit and vegetables, poultry, food eaten away from home, and sweet products, drinks and other foods....

Selling Australia as ‘clean and green’ AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Kristiansen, Paul.
‘Clean and green’ has been used as a marketing tool by Australian governments to promote agricultural products overseas. But how valid are these claims? Is the ‘clean and green’ image campaign effective? And should government be involved? We conclude that Australia may have had a ‘clean and green’ image in some markets, but in the future, concrete proof of environmental and quality credentials will be required to satisfy increasingly better-informed and more demanding customers. We argue that governments cannot, and should not, continue to promote Australian products based on an undefined ‘clean and green’ image. Rather, more resources should be directed to the development, promotion and wide adoption of integrated, credible and well-defined environmental...

On food quality in domestic markets of developing economies AgEcon
Vandeplas, Anneleen; Minten, Bart; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
Food quality has become an important determinant of success in global food trade and growers for international markets have to continuously adjust to buyers’ requirements. It is however not clear to what extent there is a demand for food quality - and how much buyers are willing to pay for it - in the domestic food markets of developing economies. Based on unique price and trader data from domestic food markets in a poor country in Africa (Madagascar) and an emerging economy in Asia (India), we compare quality and quality’s pricing. We find significantly better quality and higher quality premia (using revealed as well as stated preference methods) in the richer country, probably leading to an impetus for the development of modern market channels in this...

Institutional Change and Acceptance of Quality Assurance: The Case of Organic Farming in Germany AgEcon
Schulze, Holger; Jahn, Gabriele; Spiller, Achim.
The institutional framework of the certification scheme is a crucial factor for the future success of the organic market. Increasing complexity and a few scandals indicate that the current control structures might be insufficient. A better understanding of farmers’ attitudes is necessary to increase acceptance and to guarantee the longer-term success of the organic certification system. Against this background we designed a theoretical framework based on a cognitive perspective. The empirical basis of the study was a survey conducted with organic farmers in Germany. Results highlight that the majority of the farmers accept the present organic certification system, but are not convinced of its cost-benefit relationship.

Consumer health protection and Information and Communication Technology AgEcon
Misso, Rosa.
The environmental emergencies, the alimentary crisis, the increase of chronic illnesses, pushes the consumers to seek informative channels often also "virtual" as a reassurance for their own health, for the salubriousness of food and above all as a direct channel with the enterprises. For these last, then, it becomes fundamental to look at the information, to the virtual nets, and to the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) especially as powerful means of communication. Therefore, the work analyzes the role that the ICTs develop in the productive sector of ‘Mozzarella di Bufala Campana’, a particularly important product for the economy of the Region but in crisis because installed in a context of environmental emergencies that have seriously...

Prospects of development of quality olive oil for Italian farms: first indications in a case of study on a focus group AgEcon
Galluzzo, Nicola.
This analysis has examined the consumption of certified quality agricultural productions in the European and Italian markets; this short poster paper has observed, in particular, the perspectives of growth in some agricultural productive sectors, as for example the olive oil industry. In the second part of this research, it is showed the strategic importance of what quality represents for the consumers, as an element able to influence the consumers’ choices for certified quality olive products. Having compared the results of a case of study carried out on a focus group, with the help of 50 interviewed people, with those obtained by other studies, they pointed out the critical states that certified quality food productions might have for the consumers, the...

Spread of retailer food quality standards: An international perspective AgEcon
Herzfeld, Thomas; Drescher, Larissa S.; Grebitus, Carola.
Privately initiated food quality standards are currently important elements in the marketing of food and agricultural products. At the same time, they stand in the centre of a discussion about potential negative effects on small farmers and farmers in developing countries. This study aims at analysing the adoption of two private food standards, BRC Technical Food Standard and GlobalGAP, at an aggregated cross-country level. The results of the econometric analysis reveal some (potential) barriers for developing countries to access this type of organisational innovation. Certificates seem to be issued more probably in larger and wealthier countries, countries with a better institutional quality, better infrastructural conditions and in former UK colonies.

Competing conventions: The Big Branders’ struggle to incorporate new quality conceptions in the Norwegian food market AgEcon
Borgen, Svein Ole.
The paper addresses recent changes in the Norwegian agrifood industry from the analytical perspective of quality conventions. Storper and Salais’ “worlds of production” plus Boltanski and Thévenots’ “orders of worth” are used as a basis for the empirical study. First, the paper discusses how the largest Norwegian branders try to strategically adapt to “novel” quality attributes like health-enhancing food, origin/terroir, environmental sustainability and ethics. Second, the paper investigates the companies’ quality signalling strategy: How are these “novel” qualities communicated to consumers? Multiple options are available: Do they attempt to systematically incorporate “novel qualities” into their private brand equity (“conventionalizing qualities”)? Do...

The Supply Chains of Organic Products: An Empirical Analysis of the Processing Sector in Six EU Mediterranean Regions AgEcon
Banterle, Alessandro; Peri, Massimo.
The paper considers six EU Nuts II regions (Lombardy and Tuscany for Italy, Rhone-Alpes and Paca for France, Catalunya and Murcia for Spain) and studies the processing sector of organic products, investigating its links with agriculture and the retailing sector. The choice of these regions is due to the fact that the analysis is linked to a European project concerning cohesion among Mediterranean countries. The purpose is to analyze the processing sector of organic products in terms of firm capabilities to perform a quality management strategy and to analyze the vertical coordination in the organic supply chains. The survey was carried out on a sample of 304 firms stratified on the basis of the six regions involved in the study. Results showed the...

Organic food quality & safety perception throughout Europe AgEcon
Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Many more consumer s have tried at least once organic food, but despite higher consumer awareness, they still show a great concern about food quality and safety. Recent research showed that there is still little knowledge of how organic products are produced and processed and which characteristics are fundamental for the consumer with regard to quality and safety. In this scenario, primary producers, processors and other stakeholders in the organic supply- chain have the difficult task of understanding consumers' complex and sometimes contradictory wishes with regard to organic food. The aim of this study is to examine food quality and safety issues related to buying organic products. To provide better insight on the safety and quality issues in a cross -...
