Organic Agriculture and Food Availability Organic Eprints
Zundel, Christine; Kilcher, Lukas.
Introduction Food availability, access, stability and utilization are all part of the multi-dimensional nature of food security. The “availability” aspect, discussed here, refers to the availability of sufficient quantities of food of appropriate quality, supplied through domestic production or inputs. Productivity is usually considered the ultimate benchmark when comparing the performance of agricultural systems. For example, those involved in agricultural research and development want to know how much yield would be reduced if conventional agriculture were converted to organic agriculture. While rigorous research has been done in developed countries to address this question, scientific evidence from developing countries is rare. This paper compiles the...

Zundel, C.; Musyoka, M.; Baruah, R.; Kilcher, L.; Muriuki, A.; Vanlauwe, B.; Chabi-Olaye, A.; Mucheru, M.; Mäder, P..
Organic agriculture is more and more perceived as a promising approach to increase food security in developing countries. However, only few attempts have been made so far to assess agronomic and economic performance of organic agriculture in these^regions in a systematic way. This article reports the first year’s results of two long-term farming systems comparison field trials in Kenya and India. In sub-humid Central Kenya, on a high potential site in Meru South District (Chuka), there were no differences between yields of conventional and organic systems for the first maize and brassica crops. In contrast, organic yields were 14 to 60% lower than conventional yields on a trial site in a medium potential zone in Maragua District (Thika). It is assumed...

Die Wertschöpfungskette unverpackter Lebensmittel Perspektiven und Herausforderungen Organic Eprints
Kröger, Melanie; Goldkorn, F.; Pape, Jens.
The concept of „unpackaged shopping“ aims at reducing waste along the entire value chain. Our project focusses on analysing the value chain of unpackaged food with regard to potentials, barriers and opportunities to expand the concept. The first results revealed that there are several challenges for “unpackaged shopping” to be observed, which can be grouped under six perspectives: supply, marketing, “inside”, “outside”, environment, and branch. For instance, the producers and suppliers are hesitant to change packaging processes due to a lack of demand, wholesalers are faced with potential additional cost for deposit systems, stores are having difficulties finding appropriate products and customers are struggling with the additional efforts of...

Experiential Learnings Inclimate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Through Organic and Sustainable Farming in the Philippines Organic Eprints
Villegas, Pablito; Catedral, Isagani; Custodio, Henry.
This paper presents the best practices done by the Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Farmers’ Cooperative to address climate change impacts in agriculture. The issues include food security and access to safe, affordable and health promoting foods; water sufficiency and resilience to drought; environmental and ecological stability of an agro-ecosystem; human health and healthy lifestyle; and climate impacts on agricultural productivity.

How does agricultural biodiversity contribute to food security? Organic Eprints
Horna, Daniela; Sengupta, D..
The contribution of agricultural biodiversity to agricultural production and food security is widely accepted. In the economic research this contribution has been evaluated from the production and from the consumption side. On the production side, agricultural diversity provides services that support the productivity of the system. These services include pest control, soil fertility, or in general system resilience to extreme climate events. On the consumption side, agricultural biodiversity enhances the diet diversity thereby enabling small farmers to consume a variety of foods. To our knowledge, however, the long term economics contribution of agricultural biodiversity to agricultural production and food security has not been evaluated in depth. On...

Functional agrobiodievrsity - a novel approach to optimize pest control in fruit production Organic Eprints
Jacobsen, Stine K.; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Functional agrobiodiversity was implemented in organic apple orchards in Denmark, by perennial flower strips. Two techniques were tested with the purpose of enhancing natural enemies and reducing damage of the rosy apple aphid.

Bio-Landbau als Chance für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas.

ROLE OF WOMEN FOR FOOD SECURITY AND ENVIRONMENT IN BANGLADESH Organic Eprints
Islam, F.; Uddin, M. Nazim.
Empowering women has multiple benefits for women themselves and for their families and communities. In Bangladesh, rural women are involved in different income generating activities. As a result, their empowerments are increasing beside the food security, environment and nutrition. The main focus of the study was to determine the women empowerment status through the participation for organic agriculture, food security, environment and nutrition, and to examine the selected characteristics of the rural women. Data were collected January to March, 2013 through pre-tested interview schedule from randomly selected 105 respondent from three villages of Pabna Sadar Upazilla. The selected ten characteristics of the rural women were considered as the independent...
