Consumer expect organic food as safe and healthy. The standards of organic farming are able to prevent contaminations and diseases effecting human health direct and indirect: · Direct food safety means the prohibition of specific production and processing inputs. Organic farming is minimising the use of external inputs (positive lists), the prohibition of synthetic fertilisers, pesticids, preservatives and additives, no GMOs and irradiation, no human waste water slurry (heavy methals, chemical hazards etc.) on fields, no preventive use of antibiotics, double withhold period after veterinary treatments as well as no hormons in animal production. · Indirect food safety means the protection of the abiotic and biotic environment. Ground water is not... |

Abstract Country-of-origin (COO) effects and consumer evaluation of organic food products are rarely studied as a whole. Thus, how consumers evaluate imported organic products is under-researched. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate organic consumers’ preferences for imported organic food products from different origins and the underlying reasons for these preferences, including how COO preferences depend on the consumers’ geographical distance to the COO. We applied a multi-method approach which consisted of in-store interviews (N = 255) and focus groups (six, N = 38) with organic consumers in three German cities located in the north (Hamburg, close to Denmark), west (Münster, close to The Netherlands) and south (Munich, close to... |

The objective of QLIF subproject 1 was to deliver in-depth analyses of consumer expectations, attitudes and buying behaviours, with respect to quality and safety of foods from organic and low-input production systems. Results of the research showed that consumer attitudes towards quality and safety are not consistent - they are changeable, and linked to a whole bundle of assorted issues such as personal health, the natural environment, and ethics. Organic consumers appear to fall into two main types: regular and occasional purchasers. Regular consumers are committed insofar as the products satisfy their quality and safety requirements, but they are suspicious of over-processed organic foods sold in supermarkets. Occasional consumers of organic and... |

Consumers in emerging economies such as Thailand and China have started to demand organic food products – mainly due to food safety reasons (Ortega, Wang, Wu, & Hong, 2015; Roitner-Schobesberger, Darnhofer, Somsook, & Vogl, 2008; C. L. Wang, Li, Barnes, & Ahn, 2012; O. Wang, De Steur, Gellynck, & Verbeke, 2015). Since the domestic organic markets are still not well-established in Thailand and China, there is a huge potential for export of organic food products to these markets from countries, where the organic markets are more established and able to provide consumers with safe products. However, little is known about consumer preferences for imported organic food in emerging economies in Asia. A total of 139 in-store interviews were... |

Analysis of the stable isotope ratio of carbon (δ13C) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3ω3) content in milk fat is a useful indicator of organic milk production. Referring to corresponding measurements, further analyses of stable isotope ratios were performed in 120 samples of conventionally and organically produced whole milk collected from German retailers during a period of 18 months. Conventional milk predominantly exhibited higher δ15N values than organic milk, the latter of which never exceeded a maximum δ15N threshold value of 5.50‰. Measurements of δ34S did not differ significantly between organic and conventional milk. Because δ13C, in general, is related to maize consumption, δ13C in milk protein and δ13C in milk fat were equally suited for... |

This executive summary describes the main objectives and findings from a qualitative survey on consumers’ sensory experiences, expectations and preferences with respect to organic food. The survey was conducted in the frame of the European Commission funded project ECROPOLIS in 2009 in Germany (DE), France (FR), Italy (IT), Netherlands (NL), Poland (PL) and Switzerland (CH). The objectives of this research were to explore: - the range of experiences, expectations and preferences for specific sensory properties of organic food. - words that are used by consumers to differentiate the taste of organic products amongst themselves and compared to conventional ones. - symbolic’ meanings and images which participants relate to sensory characteristics of... |

The introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops in the EU has raised questions concerning gene dispersal and co-existence with non-GM farming. Quantitative estimates of the gene dispersal from fields with GM crops to fields with conspecific non-GM crops (conventional or organic) are therefore needed in order to suggest isolation distances and other management strategies to keep GM-pollination below acceptable threshold values. A meta-analysis of available gene-flow data for oilseed rape (Brassica napus) was performed. The probability distribution that seeds of non-GM oilseed rape are fertilised by foreign pollen grains from a neighbouring field of GM oilseed rape is modelled as functions of the width of the recipient (i.e. pollen receiving) field and... |

The carbon stable isotope ratio (δ13C) and the alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3ω3) content of milk fat were analyzed to examine their applicability as general markers for the authentication of organic retail milk in Germany. To record the variable effect of feeding, including the seasonal influence on milk composition, three conventionally and three organically produced brands of retail milk were collected biweekly during a period of 18 months. Altogether 286 milk samples were analyzed. Threshold values for the identification of German organic milk were established and allowed to delimit almost all conventional samples. Organic retail milk was always above a minimum C18:3ω3 content of 0.50% and below a maximum δ13C of -26.5‰. The universal and strongly negative... |

Increasing sales of organic milk mean intensified tests for authenticity are required. In addition to comprehensive documentation, analytical methods to identify organic milk, and thus to differentiate it from conventional milk, are needed for consumer protection. Because the composition of milk is fundamentally dependent on the feeding of the cows, thirty-five samples from both production systems in Germany, including farm and retail milk, were collected within 12 months, to reflect seasonal variation, and appropriate properties were analysed. Fatty acid analysis enabled organic and conventional milk to be completely distinguished, because of the higher α-linolenic acid (C18:3ω3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5ω3) content of the former. Organic milk fat... |

The majority of consumers, in particular European consumers oppose genetic modifi-cation of food. Although consumers oppose strongly genetic modification of food, genetically modified food production increases world wide. The co-existence of both, genetically modified food production and food production free of genetic modification cannot be ensured. There is always a risk that non-genetically modified food gets contaminated despite safety regulations. Thus, even organic production, which is supposed to be free of genetic modification, is endangered and can maybe not ensure to produce food definitely free of genetic modification. Against that background, this consumer research focuses on organic consumers and their attitudes towards geneti-cally modified... |
