Szente, Viktória; Szakály, Sándor; Bukovics, Zsolt; Szigeti, Orsolya; Polereczki, Zsolt; Székely, Olivér; Berke, Szilárd; Takács, Györgyi; Nagyné Farkas, Rita; Szakály, Zoltán.
According to the results of human health researches the causes of the leading diseases (heart- and cardiovascular system, malignant tumours) show a close relation with human nutrition. Therefore the topic of animal origin product quality affecting the human health receives increasing attention. The content and proportion of the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and the content of vitamins and macro- and micro elements are in the centre of interest, which justify the present study. In the background of the consumers’ decision making concerning organic food. They are wholesomeness, together with it high quality and being chemical-free, so that is why they can be considered primary consumers expectations. Due to the composition of organic milk it can...

Fatty acid and fat-soluble antioxidant concentrations in milk from high- and low-input conventional and organic systems: seasonal variation Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Nielsen, Jacob H.; Slots, Tina; Seal, Chris; Eyre, Mick D.; Sanderson, Roy; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed differences in fatty acid (FA) and antioxidant profiles between organic and conventional milk. However, they did not (a) investigate seasonal differences, (b) include non-organic, lowinput systems or (c) compare individual carotenoids, stereoisomers of α-tocopherol or isomers of conjugated linoleic acid. This survey-based study compares milk from three production systems: (i) high-input, conventional (10 farms); (ii) low-input, organic (10 farms); and (iii) low-input non-organic (5 farms). Samples were taken during the outdoor grazing (78 samples) and indoor periods (31 samples). RESULTS: During the outdoor grazing period, on average, milk from the low-input systems had lower saturated FAs, but higher mono- and...

Milk fatty acids in relation to feeding practices on Dutch organic farms Organic Eprints
de Wit, Jan; Wagenaar, Jan Paul; de Vries, Anneke; Baars, Ton.
Various recent studies have indicated positive interactions between organic animal production and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, particularly CLA and omega-3. In this paper, we present the monitoring results of 15 organic farms concerning the rela-tionship between feeding practices and fatty acid pattern. The results indicate a strong negative effect of maize and grass silage and concentrate feeding on CLA levels in milk fat. On the other hand, feeding fresh grass has a positive effect. Omega-3 levels in milk fat seem less related to feed characteristics: similar relations to those with CLA seem to exist, but feed composition explains the variation in omega-3 levels only to a limited extent, while there is a large farm influence. This might be related to...

Effect of pasture botanical composition on milk quality in organic production Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Dahl, A.V.; Steinshamn, H.; Vae, A.H.; Thuen, E.; Garmo, T.; Krogh-Jensen, S..
A continuous grazing experiment with three measurement periods, 3 weeks each, was conducted with 16 Norwegian Red dairy cows in mid lactation to compare milk quality when grazing red clover-grass (R) or botanical diverse pasture (D). The cows were offered either R or D from the start of grazing season in mid May until beginning of September 2008. Milk yield was measured and milk samples were collected in the last week in each period (end of June, beginning of August and end of August). Pasture type had no effect on milk yield and milk content of fat or protein. Cows grazing R had higher proportion of the fatty acids C18:0 (22.41 vs. 9.96, P<0.05) and C18:1t11 (0.58 vs. 0.44 g/100g FAME, P<0.05) and lower proportion of C16:0 (27.83 vs. 30.92,...

Biologische producten en gezondheid. Resultaten melkonderzoek 2005 Organic Eprints

Vitamins and selenium in bulk tank milk of organic and conventional dairy farms Organic Eprints
Emanuelson, Ulf; Fall, Nils.
Vitamins in milk are important for the human consumer, the calf and the cow. They are also important for the dairy industry because some of them affect the risk for off-flavour. Studies indicate that milk from organic and conventional dairy farms may differ in these aspects. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate whether there are differences in the concentration of vitamins and selenium in milk between organic and conventional farms in Sweden. Bulk tank milk was sampled in 20 organic and 20 conventional dairy farms at three occasions during the indoor season. Concentrations of α-tocopherol, β-carotene and retinol were determined by HPLC and selenium by hydrid generation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Herd...

Conjugated linoleic acid isomer concentrations in milk from high- and low-input management dairy systems Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Collomb, Marius; Rehberger, Brita; Sanderson, Roy; Eyre, Mick D.; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Different conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers are known to have contrasting physiology or health effects and there is growing evidence that the profile of natural isomers in milk is influenced by the production system. This survey is the first to compare feeding regimes and concentrations of 14 CLA isomers inmilk from three production systems in the UK. RESULTS: Total CLA and seven isomers (including C18 : 2 c9t11 which comprised >80% of total) were significantly higher in milk from both organically certified and non certified low input (LI) systems compared with milk from conventional high input farms. Sampling date also affected concentrations of total CLA and nine isomers; being lowest in March and highest in August. Seasonal...

The Fatty Acid Composition of UK Organic and Conventional Milk Organic Eprints
Ellis, K. A.; Innocent, G.; Grove-White, D.; Cripps, P.; McLean, W. G.; Howard, C.V.; Mihm, M..
Bulk-tank milk was collected each month from organic (n=17) and conventional (n=19) dairy farms in the UK for a 12-month longitudinal study. All milk samples were analysed for fatty acid (FA) content. The effects of farming system type, herd production level and nutritional factors on the FA composition were investigated by use of mixed model analyses. Models were constructed for saturated fatty acids (SFA), the ratio of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), total omega-3 FA, total omega-6 FA and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Organic milk had a higher proportion of PUFA to MUFA and of omega-3 FA than conventional milk, and contained a consistently lower omega-6:omega-3 FA ratio, considered to be beneficial, com-pared...

Spoilt for choice — is organic milk really any different? Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian.
Many of us buy organic milk and other produce simply through a gut feeling that “it is better for you”. We base our feeling on little more than prejudice. But it is a widespread prejudice: demand for organic milk grew by 40 million litres last year. Are there any grounds for that prejudice? And what does “better for you” mean? Gillian Butler has the evidence.
