White or red clover-grass silage in organic dairy milk production:Grassland productivity and milk production responses with different levels of concentrate Organic Eprints
Steinshamn, Håvard; Thuen, Erling.
Red (RC) or white (WC) clover were grown in mixture with grasses, ensiled and offered to dairy cows in early lactation over two successive years (48 cows per year) to compare grassland yield, feed intake, milk production and milk quality. The crops were ensiled in round bales and proportional mixtures of the second and third cut prepared each year were used to ensure that the silage treatments were representative of the crop. In addition to silage type, concentrate supplementation, without and with (10 kg/day), was included as a factor in a 2×2 factorial, continuous experiment. Total dry matter (DM) yield, silage chemical composition and totalDMintake was hardly affected by silage type. There was no effect of silage type on milk yield and milk constituents...

Clover species in grass-clover silages affects milk fatty acid composition Organic Eprints
Steinshamn, Håvard; Thuen, Erling; Brenøe, Ulrik Tutein.
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of clover species on milk fatty acid (FA) composition. Lactating dairy cows were allocated to two groups and fed grass-clover silage containing either white clover (WC) or red clover (RC), without or with concentrate supplementation. No significant interaction of clover species with concentrate supplementation could be observed. RC milk had significantly higher proportion of polyunsaturated FAs (P<0.001), particularly C18:3n-3 (P<0.001), and contained a higher n-3/n-6 FA ratio (P<0.05) than WC milk. It is concluded that RC silage, independent of concentrate supply, yielded milk with more beneficial FA composition than WC silage.

Fettsäurenzusammensetzung (CLA, Omega-3-Fettsäuren) und Isotopensignatur (13C) der Milch ökologischer und konventioneller Betriebe und Molkereien Organic Eprints
Ehrlich, Dipl Ing. Maria Elisabeth.

Effect of grassland management in organic and conventional farming systems on bovine milk quality – a field study Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Thirty-two dairy farms in Middle-Norway participated in a field study in 2007 and 2008. Nine organic farms with short-term grassland (SO) were paired with 9 conventional farms with short-term grassland (SC) and 7 organic farms with long-term grassland (LO) were paired with 7 conventional farms with long-term grassland (LC) with regard to proximity and calving pattern. Every second month feed and tanker milk samples were collected from each farm. Data from the Norwegian dairy herd recording system were collected and botanical composition before first cut in 2007 was analysed. Milk samples were analysed for chemical composition, fatty acid composition, vitamin concentration, selenium concentration and phytoestrogen concentration. In this paper results from...

Adler, Steffen; Dahl, A.; Steinshamn, H.; Thuen, E.; Garmo, T.; Krogh-Jensen, S..

Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Scheeder, Martin R.L.; Wettstein, Hans-Ruedi.
In two experiments it was investigated which factors to what extent determine the fatty acid composition milk when cows are grazing high alpine pastures. The influences of altitude per se, of alpine forage quality, of concentrate-free diet type and of the overall grazing effect were separated by the experimental design. The most important factor which significantly elevated the concentrations of CLA, α-linolenic acid (ALA) and n-3 PUFA in milk fat was found to be the alpine diet type, i.e. the feeding of roughage-only (as well hay as pasture of as well lowland as alpine origin) with omission of concentrates and maize. Additionally a clear positive effect of the forage quality of alpine pastures on ALA concentration in milk fat was found. The latter effect...

Potentials to differentiate milk composition by different feeding strategies Organic Eprints
Slots, T.; Butler, G.; Leifert, C.; Kristensen, T.; Skibsted, L.H.; Nielsen, J.H..
To investigate the effect of the dietary intake of the cow on milk composition, bulk-tank milk was collected on 5 occasions from conventional (n = 15) and organic (n = 10) farms in Denmark and on 4 occasions from low-input nonorganic farms in the United Kingdom, along with management and production parameters. Production of milk based on feeding a high intake of cereals, pasture, and grass silage resulted in milk with a high concentration of α-linolenic acid (9.4 ± 0.2 mg/ kg of fatty acids), polyunsaturated fatty acids (3.66 ± 0.07 mg/kg of fatty acids), and natural stereoisomer of α-tocopherol (RRR-α-tocopherol, 18.6 ± 0.5 mg/kg of milk fat). A milk production system using a high proportion of maize silage, by-products, and commercial concentrate mix was...
