Methane seepage at Vestnesa Ridge (NW Svalbard) since the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
Schneider, A.; Panieri, G.; Lepland, A.; Consolaro, C.; Cremiere, A.; Forwick, M.; Johnson, J. E.; Plaza-faverola, A.; Sauer, S.; Knies, J..
Multiple proxies in the geological record offshore NW Svalbard track shallow subseafloor diagenesis and seafloor methane seepage during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) extent and the disintegration of the Svalbard Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS). Vestnesa Ridge, located at 79°N and in 1200 m water depth, is one of the northernmost known active methane seep sites and is characterised by a subseafloor fluid flow system, numerous seafloor pockmarks and gas flares in the water column. In this study, we develop a Late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphic framework, use stable oxygen and carbon isotope signatures (δ18O, δ13C) of benthic and planktic foraminifera, the mineralogical and carbon isotope composition of methane-derived authigenic carbonate (MDAC) and...

Crystallinity of foraminifera shells: A proxy to reconstruct past bottom water CO(3)(=) changes? ArchiMer
Bassinot, Fc; Melieres, F; Gehlen, M; Levi, C; Labeyrie, L.
The reconstruction of past changes in bottom water CO(3)(=) is central to evaluating competing oceanic scenarios that deal with long-term variations in atmospheric pCO(2). In search of a quantitative bottom water CO(3)(=) proxy, we analyzed the variations of calcite crystallinity of planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber shells picked from core top samples along three depth transects: Ontong Java Plateau and the northeast margin of Irian Jaya, in the western equatorial Pacific, and the Sierra Leone Rise, in the eastern tropical Atlantic. The strong empirical relationship between calcite crystallinity ( inferred from the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of calcite (104) X-ray diffraction peak) and bottom water saturation relative to calcite...

Oceanographic parameters in continental margin of the State of Ceará (northeastern Brazil) deduced from C and O isotopes in foraminifers Anais da ABC (AABC)
Marques,Wanessa S.; Menor,Eldemar de A.; Sial,Alcides N.; Manso,Valdir A.V.; Freire,Satander S..
Specimens of Recent foraminifera of Amphistegina radiata, Peneroplis planatus and Globigerinoides ruber, from fifty samples of surface sediments of the continental margin of the State of Ceará, Brazil, have been analyzed for carbon and oxygen isotopes to investigate oceanographic parameters and determine the values of delta18O of the oceanic water. From a comparison between values of delta18O obtained for ocean water using the linear equations by (Craig and Gordon 1965) and the one by Wolff et al. (1998), it became evident that the former yielded a more reliable value (0.2‰ SMOW) than the latter. Lower values of delta18O for the ocean water in this continental margin resulted from continental water influence. Values of 18O (-0.3‰ to -1.5‰ PDB for benthic...
