Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of forest rotation on the technical and economic feasibility of eucalyptus wood production for charcoal, in different productivity classes. Data came from Eucalyptus stands whose area was stratified into three classes of productivity: high, medium, and low. To each class, a different criterion of forest rotation was applied, as follows: age of maximum productivity, economic rotation age, single harvest age, and no technical parameter. Analyses of economic feasibility and production were performed for a 21-year planning horizon. For rotation without a technical parameter, a simulation by the Monte Carlo method was performed. For all rotation criteria, feasibility was observed for high- and... |

In light of the large volumes of pine killed in the Interior forests in British Columbia by the mountain pine beetle, many are keen to employ forest biomass as an energy source. To assess the feasibility of a wood biomass-fired power plant in the BC Interior it is necessary to know both how much physical biomass might be available over the life of a plant, but also its location because transportation costs are likely to be a major operating cost for any facility. To address these issues, we construct a mathematical programming model of fiber flows in the Quesnel Timber Supply Area of BC over a 25-year time horizon. The focus of the model is on minimizing the cost of supplying feedstock throughout space and time. Results indicate that over the life of the... |

At the present time, the State of Pará is the third in the ranking of exports and concentrates 75% of the extracted wood from the nation’s native forests. Of the extracted wood from the Legal Amazon, 64% is directed to the national market while 36% is directed to export markets. The objective of this study was identify and to map, using the Normalized Index of Concentration (NIC), during the 1998 to 2004 period, the municipalities which are specialized in the forest, wood and furniture activities and that show significant potential to be transformed in local clusters. The results showed the existence of nine municipalities specialized, simultaneously, in the two activities, indicating the possibility of implementing public policies directed to influence... |
