Fracture nonunions represent important complications in orthopedic surgeries. Nonunion repairs or bone defects are surgically challenging. Our aim was to describe a nonunion case, which was repaired with rapid bone recovery. An 8-month-old male mixed breed dog that has been previously operated was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of São Paulo State University, with a right radius-ulna nonunion and an amputated contralateral forelimb. A cancellous bone graft was collected from a partially amputated limb, in order to correct the nonunion, and used in association with a locking plate. After four weeks, the bone graft had been incorporated into the original bone. Clinical union with good weight bearing was achieved after eight weeks. |

ABSTRACT Pelvic fractures correspond to 20 to 30 % of the fractures observed in dogs. Complete fractures, especially with bone axis deviation should be surgically treated. The mechanical study of surgical techniques is of utmost importance to assess the best way of treating these injuries. This study compared, biomechanically, the use of a dynamic compression plate (DCP) and screws (group 1) or screws and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (group 2) to stabilize an iliac fracture using a static test. Sixteen canine synthetic hemi-pelvises (test specimens) with a transverse iliac osteotomy were used. After fixation with implants, a load was applied to the acetabulum until failure. Group 1 maximal compressive load was 133.9±18.60 N, displacement at yield... |

We evaluated the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporotic fractures in kidney transplantation (KT) patients and determined risk factors associated with osteoporotic fractures. The study was conducted on 191 patients (94 men and 97 women) with first KT for 3 years or more presenting stable and preserved renal function (serum creatinine levels lower than 2.5 mg/dl). KT patients were on immunosuppressive therapy and the cumulative doses of these drugs were also evaluated. BMD was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at multiple sites (spine, femur and total body). Quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus (broadband ultrasound attenuation, speed of sound, and stiffness index, SI) was also performed. Twenty-four percent (46) of... |

ABSTRACT Fabricated food gels involving the use of hydrocolloids are gaining polpularity as confectionery/convenience foods. Starch is commonly combined with a hydrocolloid (protein our polyssacharides), particularly in the food industry, since native starches generally do not have ideal properties for the preparation of food products. Therefore the texture studies of starch-protein mixtures could provide a new approach in producing starch-based food products, being thus acritical attribute that needs to be carefully adjusted to the consumer liking. This work investigated the texture and rheological properties of mixed gels of different concentrations of rice starch (15%, 17.5%, and 20%) and whey protein isolate (0%, 3%, and 6%) with different crosshead... |

A multiple mandible fracture was diagnosed in a mixed breed dog. After clinical examination, extra-oral radiographs were used to evaluate the trauma but, a complete visualization of the fractures extension was difficult due to the great of structures of cranium. Then, the computed tomography was accomplished to help and to find all osseous tissues fractured, their exact location, existent fragments and their positions; being superior to the radiograph exam in the accurate diagnosis realized. |

This paper presents test results from mode I interlaminar fracture and transverse tensile tests on unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites used in racing yacht construction. Fibre modulus has been varied from 380 to 640 GPa. PAN fibre reinforced composite properties, delamination resistance (G(Ie) and G(Ip)) and transverse strain to failure, decrease as fibre modulus increases. Composites based on the highest modulus pitch fibres show higher transverse failure strains than the highest modulus PAN fibre composites. A distinct failure mechanism, crack propagation within the fibres, was observed for the pitch based reinforcement. The transverse tensile tests allowed transverse fibre modulus to be estimated as 11.5 GPa for the PAN and 9 GPa for the pitch... |

Tensile properties and crack propagation properties, especially critical strain energy release rate in mode I, GIC, have been used to investigate fracture properties of elastomers and their relationships with microstructure. These investigations were mainly based on a series of comparisons: first, the behaviour of polychloroprene rubber (CR), undergoing stress hardening due to strain induced crystallization (SIC) and oxidative crosslinking (OCL) was compared with that of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), which undergoes SIC but not OCL, and with a polyurethane based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (PU) which undergoes OCL but not SIC. Comparisons were also made on CR between fracture behaviour at ambient temperature, where SIC occurs and at 100°C where... |

The use of composites for deep sea applications requires a thorough understanding of the behaviour of these materials. While several studies have examined the influence of pressure on in-plane properties few data are available for the interlaminar fracture behaviour. This paper presents results from such tests performed in a specially designed pressure vessel mounted on a standard test machine, which allows pressures up to 1000 bars (100 MPa) to be applied during mechanical testing. Mode I and Mode 11 tests have been performed on a unidirectional IM7/977-2 carbon/epoxy composite. No effect of pressure was noted on Mode I fracture toughness. A data reduction scheme has been developed for Mode 11 loading and an increase in Glic with increasing pressure was... |

This study deals with the durability of composites based on polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) in a humid environment, and more especially, with the loss of fracture properties. It is known that PA6.6 undergoes plasticization in the presence of water, but hydrolysis also occurs. This hydrolysis leads to a sharp decline in fracture properties in resin. The aim of this study is thus to understand the behavior of two PA6.6-based composites, one containing short glass fibers and the other both glass fibers and a rubber. The results showed the transition from ductile to brittle behavior as a function of hydrolysis time in resin. For composites, the drop in elongation breaking with the macromolecular chain length was linear for all ageing conditions considered here without... |
