Patterns of Collusion in the U.S. Crop Insurance Program: An Empirical Analysis AgEcon
Rejesus, Roderick M.; Little, Bertis B.; Lovell, Ashley C.; Cross, Mike H.; Shucking, Michael.
This article analyzes anomalous patterns of agent, adjuster, and producer claim outcomes and determines the most likely pattern of collusion that is suggestive of fraud, waste, and abuse in the federal crop insurance program. Log-linear analysis of Poisson-distributed counts of anomalous entities is used to examine potential patterns of collusion. The most likely pattern of collusion present in the crop insurance program is where agents, adjusters, and producers nonrecursively interact with each other to coordinate their behavior. However, if a priori an intermediary is known to initiate and coordinate the collusion, a pattern where the producer acts as the intermediary is the most likely pattern of collusion evidenced in the data. These results have...

Parmalat AgEcon
Dobson, William D..
This Discussion Paper describes developments affecting Parmalat of Italy, once one of the world's leading dairy-food firms, which filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2003. After the bankruptcy, it was discovered that fraud on a massive scale had occurred at Parmalat, putting the firm in the infamous category occupied by Enron, Tyco International, and WorldCom. This paper analyzes the origins, growth, strategies, downfall, and restructuring of Parmalat, and identifies implications for the U.S. and world dairy industries and international businesses that flow from the firm's experiences.

Use of stable isotopes of carbon to detect coconut water adulteration Scientia Agricola
Imaizumi,Vitor Massami; Sartori,Maria Márcia Pereira; Ducatti,Carlos; Venturini Filho,Waldemar Gastoni.
ABSTRACT: Industrialized coconut water may have been adulterated by adding sugar above the limit permitted by law. According to Brazilian law, industrialized coconut water can receive the maximum addition of 1 g of sugar per 100 mL of the drink. This work aimed to detect adulteration in industrialized coconut water produced in Brazil and measure the relative isotopic enrichment in fresh coconut water, using the techniques of stable isotopes of carbon. Fresh coconut water samples from 13 locations, industrialized coconut water samples of 17 different brands and cane sugar were analyzed by Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer coupled to an elemental analyzer. The relative isotopic enrichment found for fresh coconut water samples ranged from −26.40 to −23.76. From...

Preservatives and neutralizing substances in milk: analytical sensitivity of official specific and nonspecific tests, microbial inhibition effect, and residue persistence in milk Ciência Rural
Silva,Livia Cavaletti Corrêa da; Tamanini,Ronaldo; Pereira,Juliana Ramos; Rios,Edson Antônio; Ribeiro Junior,José Carlos; Beloti,Vanerli.
Milk fraud has been a recurring problem in Brazil; thus, it is important to know the effect of most frequently used preservatives and neutralizing substances as well as the detection capability of official tests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the analytical sensitivity of legislation-described tests and nonspecific microbial inhibition tests, and to investigate the effect of such substances on microbial growth inhibition and the persistence of detectable residues after 24/48h of refrigeration. Batches of raw milk, free from any contaminant, were divided into aliquots and mixed with different concentrations of formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, chlorinated alkaline detergent, or sodium hydroxide. The analytical...
