Free-living and particle-associated prokaryote metabolism in giant kelp forests: Implications for carbon flux in a sub-Antarctic coastal area ArchiMer
Schapira, Mathilde; Mcquaid, Christopher D.; Froneman, Pierre W..
Extensive beds of large subtidal kelps are characteristic of many temperate and subpolar coastlines. They provide habitats for a wide range of other species and are sites of high primary production that generate large quantities of water-borne particles and dissolved organic compounds that support distinctive communities of prokaryotes. We measured prokaryotic metabolism along transects from the shore to the outside of three giant kelp forests (Macrocystis pyrifera) located in the shelf waters of the Prince Edward Islands (Southern Ocean). Abundance, heterotrophic production (PHP), respiration rates (R-ETS) and growth efficiencies (PGE) were investigated within the particle-associated (PA) and the free-living (FL) communities. Temperature, salinity and...

Gnathostomulida from the (sub)tropical northwestern Atlantic Naturalis
Sterrer, Wolfgang.
Sterrer, W., 1997. Gnathostomulida from the (sub)tropical northwestern Atlantic. Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 74, Amsterdam, 1998: 1-178. Based on 1035 specimens of Gnathostomulida from 106 samples collected during the period 1968-1997 in the tropical and subtropical northwestern Atlantic, 45 species are presented, including one new family (Paucidentulidae nov. fam.), two new genera ( Vampyrognathia nov. gen. and Paucidentula nov. gen.), and 13 new species: Haplognathia belizensis, Cosmognathia aquila, Pterognathia alcicornis, P. pygmaea, Mesognatharia eastwardiae, Onychognathia rhombocephala, Vampyrognathia horribilis, V. minor, Paucidentula anonyma, Gnathostomula uncinata, Triplignathia (?) bathycola, Austrognatharia medusifera, and A. stirialis.

The phylogenetic position of the solitary zoanthid genus Sphenopus (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) Naturalis
Reimer, J.D.; Lin, M.; Fujii, T..
The zoanthid genus Sphenopus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoantharia), like many other brachycnemic zoanthids, is found in shallow subtropical and tropical waters, but is uniquely unitary (solitary, monostomatous), azooxanthellate, and free-living. With sparse knowledge of its phylogenetic position, this study examines the phylogenetic position of Sphenopus within the family Sphenopidae utilizing specimens from southern Taiwan and Brunei collected in 1999-2011, and furthermore analyzes the evolution of its unique character set via ancestral state reconstruction analyses. Phylogenetic analyses surprisingly show Sphenopus to be phylogenetically positioned within the genus Palythoa, which is colonial (polystomatous), zooxanthellate, and attached to solid substrate....

Occurrence of Avian Mycoplasmas in Free-Living Muscovy-Ducks (Cairina Moschata) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Magalhães,BSN; Pereira,VLA; Machado,LS; Dias,TS; Balthazar,DA; Barreto,ML; Troccoli,F; Cunha,NC; Nascimento,ER; Almeida,FM; Almosny,NR.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to investigate, by culture and PCR, the occurrence of Mollicutes, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae in free-living Muscovy-ducks (Cairina moschata) from the Rio Zoo, RJ, Brazil. Tracheal swabs were obtained from 82 asymptomatic ducks and the samples were submitted to culture of mycoplasmas and PCR for identification of Mollicutes Class, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS). Samples were also analyzed directly by PCR, without prior culture, for Mollicutes, MG and MS. Eighteen (18/82) Muscovy-ducks were positive for Mollicutes by culture, all isolates were confirmed as Mollicutes and seven were identified as MG. Of the samples analyzed directly by PCR, without prior culture, 17,1% (14/82)...
