Seasonal and diel variation in the fish assemblage of a Neotropical delta in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saccol-Pereira,Adriana; Fialho,Clarice B..
The objective of this study was to identify the patterns of seasonal and diel variation and the most important abiotic factors that influence variation in the fish assemblage of the Delta of the Jacuí River in southern Brazil. Seventy-two samples were collected over a one year period. Water temperature was the abiotic factor with the greatest influence on the distribution of the assemblage. The structure of the assemblage exhibited significant changes in terms of species abundance and biomass during the year, with the greatest abundance and biomass being observed during the autumn. There was no significant difference between day and night in terms of abundance, but biomass was significantly greater during the night than during the day.

Aquicultura atual no Semiárido. Infoteca-e
CAMPECHE, D. F. B..

AimAssessing the consequences of a future increase in non-native species introductions and native species extirpations on taxonomic similarity among fish faunas. LocationWorld-wide. MethodsWe designed 42 scenarios of future species introductions and extirpations to simulate future fish composition for 1054 river basins. Using these simulated future compositions, we computed the change in taxonomic similarity among pairs of fish faunas from historical to future situation at the river basin, biogeographic realm and world scales. ResultsAccording to all our scenarios, taxonomic similarity among fish faunas will strongly increase in the future at the three spatial scales considered. Fish faunas from the Southern Hemisphere, which are currently the less...

Diel feeding periodicity, daily ration and relative food consumption in some fish populations in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka ArchiMer
Weliange, Wasantha S.; Amarasinghe, Upali S.; Moreau, Jacques; Villanueva, Ching-maria.
Twelve diel surveys were carried out in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka viz. Minneriya, Udawalawe and Victoria, to investigate diel feeding patterns, daily ration and relative food consumption in fish populations. Stomach content weights of different size classes of various fish species in the three reservoirs in 12 diel surveys were analysed using an iterative method, MAXIMS. Predominantly herbivorous or detritivorous fish species such as Amblypharyngodon melettinus and Oreochromis niloticus exhibited one peak in the diel feeding pattern. Two peak feeding periods were evident in predominantly insectivores and/or zooplanktivores (e. g., Puntius chola and Rasbora daniconius) and interestingly in macrophyte feeders (i.e., Etroplus suratensis, Puntius...

Enzymatic polymorphism study as help for constitution of initial broodstock for a new cultivated finfish species. ArchiMer
Renno, J; Luquet, P.
Leporinus friderici is a South American promising species for fish culture. In French Guiana the "morphological species", L. friderici, L. granti, L. lebaili and L. affinis steyermarki are found. Their identification is sometimes difficult on usual criterion. To constitute an initial broodstock of L. friderici from local wild populations, the genetic structure of these species was studied. Fifteen enzyme systems, representing twenty loci, were screened.

Hormone-induced spawning of cultured tropical finfishes. ArchiMer
Marte, C.
Commercially important tropical freshwater and marine finfishes are commonly spawned with pituitary homogenate, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and semi-purified fish gonadotropins. These preparations are often administered in two doses, a lower priming dose followed a few hours later by a higher resolving dose. Interval between the first and second injections may vary from 3-24 hours depending on the species. Variable doses are used even for the same species and may be due to variable potencies of the gonadotropin preparations.

Nutritional bioenergetics and estimation of waste production in non-salmonids ArchiMer
Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The general principles behind the bioenergetic approach for predicting growth, as well as for decreasing feed and nutrient losses, have been set forth for salmonids. Given the diversification of fish farming activities around the world and the ever increasing concern for water quality management, it becomes essential to verify whether an approach developed for salmonids is applicable to other species. Given this general background, an attempt is made here to check the theoretical assumptions and technical considerations behind the bioenergetic principles developed for rainbow trout with other freshwater or marine species. From a conceptual point of view, recent literature data do indicate that as far as nitrogen or energy balance is concerned, the general...

Global biogeographical regions of freshwater fish species ArchiMer
Leroy, Boris; Dias, Murilo S.; Giraud, Emilien; Hugueny, Bernard; Jézéquel, Céline; Leprieur, Fabien; Oberdorff, Thierry; Tedesco, Pablo A.
Aim To define the major biogeographical regions and transition zones for freshwater fish species. Taxon Strictly freshwater species of actinopterygian fish (i.e. excluding marine and amphidromous fish families). Methods We based our bioregionalization on a global database of freshwater fish species occurrences in drainage basins, which, after filtering, includes 11,295 species in 2,581 basins. On the basis of this dataset, we generated a bipartite (basin‐species) network upon which we applied a hierarchical clustering algorithm (the Map Equation) to detect regions. We tested the robustness of regions with a sensitivity analysis. We identified transition zones between major regions with the participation coefficient, indicating the degree to which a basin...

Population genetics of the endangered catfish Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) based on species-specific microsatellite loci Neotropical Ichthyology
García-Castro,Kevin León; Rangel-Medrano,José David; Landínez-García,Ricardo Marcel; Márquez,Edna Judith.
ABSTRACT The Neotropical catfish genus Pseudoplatystoma comprises eight species of large size, widely distributed in South American basins. The endangered species P. magdaleniatum is endemic to Magdalena basin (Colombia), experiences high fishing pressure and its population genetics is relatively unknown. To study the genetic status and structure of P. magdaleniatum, 25 species-specific polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed using next-generation sequencing and then tested in samples collected in the Magdalena-Cauca basin. Based on 15 of these loci, P. magdaleniatum showed a high number of alleles per locus (9-10), high values of observed (0.762-0.798) and expected (0.770-0.791) heterozygosities, recent reduction of population size and gene flow....

Difference in reproduction energy content in muscles on fish from reservoirs in Paraná State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Espínola,Luis Alberto; Dourado,Elãine Christine dos Santos; Benedito,Evanilde.
The variation in energy in the muscles of the most representative fish species from three Neotropical Reservoirs was investigated to determine the effect of the reproductive process on the amount of energy allocated and a possible relationship between the general welfare of the species and their caloric content. Significant differences were detected between the sexes and among the stages of gonad maturity. In general, the variation in energy in the muscles indicate to be a function of the reproductive cycle. In most examined species, females presented the highest caloric values, reflecting physiological differences in their use of energy, relative to the reproductive process. However, there was no significant correlation between caloric values and the...

Revision of the Neotropical trahiras of the Hoplias lacerdae species-group (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Erythrinidae) with descriptions of two new species Neotropical Ichthyology
Oyakawa,Osvaldo T.; Mattox,George M. T..
Hoplias lacerdae was originally described from the rio Ribeira de Iguape, Iporanga, São Paulo State. The Hoplias lacerdae group is defined as containing generally large trahiras with the medial margins of dentaries running parallel to each other and lacking teeth on the basihyal compared to the H. malabaricus group in which the medial margins of the dentaries converge towards the mandibular symphysis and which have teeth on the basihyal. A taxonomic revision of the group based on meristic and morphometric data identified five distinct species: H. lacerdae distributed in the rio Ribeira de Iguape and rio Uruguai; H. intermedius from the rio São Francisco, upper rio Paraná basin, and rio Doce; H. brasiliensis from rivers of the Atlantic Coastal drainage from...

The influence of flood pulse on fish communities of floodplain canals in the Middle Solimões River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Sousa,Raniere G. C.; Freitas,Carlos E. de C..
The functioning of large river systems with adjacent floodplains is strongly influenced by the flood pulse. This phenomenon is the main structuring force for the biota, including fish communities that use floodplain environments for spawning, feeding, nursery and refuge. In floodplains and in the entire basin, the volume of water controls internal flows. During rising water, the high discharge of the river acts as a natural barrier to the canals that connect floodplain lakes and the Solimões River, because the water flows from river to lake. During the dry period, there is a reduction of discharge and the water flow is reversed or stationary. These canals are environments with distinct ecological characteristics such as differentiated limnology and water...
