ABSTRACT Length and weight data are useful in fisheries management and standard results of fish monitoring programs. Length-weight relationship (LWR) is used for estimating the weight corresponding to a given length, and the condition factor is used to compare the body condition, fatness or health of fish populations. This study aimed to estimate the LWR and the condition factor for 12 freshwater fish species from the Igarapé Fortaleza basin, a tributary of the Amazonas River system in the State of Amapá, eastern Amazon (Brazil). The coefficient of determination, the allometric condition factor and the allometric coefficient varied among species, and were compared with populations elsewhere. In 83.3% of the species, the allometric coefficient remained... |

ABSTRACT Assessment of biodiversity is fundamental for the understanding of ecological interactions, but fish parasites were neglected in biodiversity estimates for a long time. The aim of this paper was to investigate the diversity of parasites in Satanoperca jurupari in the Amazon River system in Brazil. Of the fish examined, 90.0% were parasitized by one or more species of protozoans and metazoans, and a total of 3,110,094 parasites were collected. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Sciadicleithum juruparii, Clinostomum marginatum, Posthodiplostomum sp., Genarchella genarchella, Argulus multicolor and Ergasilus coatiarus were found. However, I. multifiliis and P. pillulare were the most prevalent, abundant and dominant parasites,... |

The conservation of diverse and well-distributed fish taxa, as the genus Leporinus, relies intrinsically on the knowledge of the ecological attributes of its representatives. Aiming to increase this knowledge, studies on diet and ecomorphology are ideal to provide important information about species ecology. Thus, this study aimed to analyze aspects of feeding ecology of L. reticulatus, from the upper Rio Juruena, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The diet of specimens in different ontogenetic stages was compared, as well as their teeth morphology and ecomorphological attributes. Leporinus reticulatus presented omnivorous diet, with higher consumption of invertebrates by smaller specimens (younger ones), and gradual introduction of plant items in larger specimens... |

The aim of this study was not only to determine the red blood cells parameters, thrombocyte and leukocyte counts in farmed Brycon amazonicus (matrinxã), to compare these parameters among Bryconinae species from literature, and also to investigate the presence of special granulocytic cells in these fish. The results of the blood cells parameters here established for farmed B. amazonicus, a species of great economic importance in Brazilian aquaculture, could help a better understanding of the blood features in natural populations of this Amazon species. Blood parameters varied between Bryconinae species investigated, mainly the red blood cell counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). The presence of the blood granulocytes, neutrophils... |

Fish is the main source of protein in the Amazon and fishing is one of the most important sources of income for the Amazonian population. Serrasalmus spilopleura is a species that have been increasingly consumed by riverside communities, although it is only occasionally commercialized at regional markets. Therefore, this work sought to generate information about the population biology of S. spilopleura captured in floodplain lakes, Jaitêua and São Lourenço, in Manacapuru, Amazonas State. The population parameters were estimated by analyzing the distribution of the length frequency with the help of the ELEFAN I routine of the FISAT II program. The weight/length relationship was estimated by linear regression, longevity by Taylor’s method, rate of natural... |

Biological collections preserve the biodiversity of a nation. The fish collection of the Universidade Federal de Rondônia, recently established, contains about 41% of freshwater fish species known to occur in Brazil, and 24% of South America. The biological material is distributed into 1,067 species, 21,963 lots and 149,192 specimens, gathered during five years of work. From this collection, 99% of the lots have georeferenced location, and 94% of the species were sampled in the Madeira River basin, the largest tributary in flow, drainage area and sediment discharge of the Amazonas River basin. Among the 1,008 species collected in the Madeira River basin, 80% were reviewed by Brazilian, North American and French experts, and represents the highest richness... |

This work is the first study on parasitic fauna of Curimata cyprinoides Linnaeus, 1766 (Curimatidae) and the host-parasite relationship. The total of 154,740 parasites such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ciliophora), trophozoite of Spironucleus sp. (Hexamitidae), Urocleidoides sp. (Monogenoidea), Digenea gen. sp. and Polymorphus sp. (Polymorphidae) were collected. The component community showed low diversity (HB = 0.004 ± 0.020) and parasite species richness (1.4 ± 0.6). However, I. multifiliis and Urocleidoides sp. were prevalent and with higher intensity on the host population and also aggregated the distribution pattern. The occurrence of these ectoparasites in C. cyprinoides may be a consequence of its alimentary diet. Positive correlation between... |

the esophagus, stomach and intestine of Satanoperca pappaterra using histological techniques. The species presents detritivore-invertivore feeding habit and is widely distributed in Neotropical continental waters. The esophagus is short, the stomach is small with saccular form and the intestine is long. The histological sections were stained using hematoxylin/eosin and Periodic Acid Schiff. Throughout the digestive tract, the gastric wall is composed by four different tunicae: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa, besides distinct intrinsic innervation represented by the submucosal and myenteric ganglionated plexuses. Depending on the organ, several characteristics were peculiar such as the external muscle layer of the esophagus that permeates... |

The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle... |
