Zooplankton from the upper 200 m of the Almeria-Oran frontal region, (east of the Alboran sea, western Mediterranean) was sampled during winter 1997, using two nets equipped with 200 and 80 mum mesh. Eight sites representative of the different hydrodynamic structures (Mediterranean water, geostrophic Atlantic jet, associated anticyclonic gyre) were investigated over 2 d, using two day- and two night-samples per site. Zooplankton biomass was correlated to chlorophyll abundance, with lowest values in the oligotrophic Mediterranean water and highest in Atlantic water. The high biomass resulted from the enhancement of the secondary production, as indicated by the greater proportion of nauplii and the increase of zooplankton metabolism and feeding. Total... |

Upwelling of cold. saline, and nutrient rich water was observed in late September 1999 along an east-west transect in the SW Kattegat. The Kattegat forms part of the transitional zone between the high saline North Sea and the low saline Baltic Sea. The upwelling occurred after an extended period of northward flow and eastern winds in the Kattegat, that changed into a southward flow as wind ceased. The upwelling was the result of a combination of high current speeds and bottom topography whereby the high-speed inflow water was forced towards the surface at the slope. Nutrient data show that the upwelling brought nutrient rich bottom water to the light exposed surface and a related strong (1943.5 ml(-1)) bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima was... |

This study presents the results of an electronic tagging programme on mature Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) that has been conducted since 2007 offshore of the French Mediterranean Coast. The spatial distributions of ABFT showed little year-to-year variation and the fish concentrated in a small area of the central northwestern Mediterranean, where they may stay for several months. The individual tracks display sinuous trajectories in this area, indicating the possibility of feeding behaviour. No fish went out to the North Atlantic, but several fish displayed some migration to the southern western Mediterranean Sea during winter and the central Mediterranean during the spawning season. The homing behaviour of one fish after a full year as well as the back and... |

Respiration, excretion (NH4 and PO4) and feeding of zooplankton from the upper 200 m of the Almeria-Oran frontal region (western Mediterranean), were studied during winter 1997. Eight sites belonging to the three main hydrodynamic structures of the area (Mediterranean water, geostrophic Atlantic jet and associated anticyclonic gyre) were considered. Lowest values of respiration, PO4 excretion, O/P atomic ratio and particle ingestion were found in Mediterranean waters. At the frontal limit, respiration and ammonium excretion were enhanced compared to the adjacent structures (Mediterranean water and Atlantic jet). In the gyre water, lowest O/N and highest N/P values were observed and maximum faecal pellet production and reproduction activity (inferred from... |
