The Fate of Coho Salmon Nomads: The Story of an Estuarine-Rearing Strategy Promoting Resilience Ecology and Society
Koski, K V.; The Nature Conservancy Alaska Field Office, Juneau, Alaska, USA; kkoski@tnc.org.
The downstream movement of coho salmon nomads (age 0), conventionally considered surplus fry, has been an accepted characteristic of juvenile coho salmon for the past 40 to 50 yr. The fate of these nomads, however, was not known and they were assumed to perish in the ocean. Several studies and observations have recently provided new insights into the fate of nomads and the role of the stream-estuary ecotone and estuary in developing this life history strategy that promotes coho resilience. Chinook and sockeye salmon have developed the ocean-type life-history strategy to exploit the higher productivity of the estuarine environment and migrate to the ocean at age 0. Nomad coho can acclimate to brackish water, and survive and grow well in the stream-estuary...

Nutrition of the seabass Lates calcarifer ArchiMer
Cuzon, Gerard; Chou, R; Fuchs, Jacques.
The Primary Production Department of Singapore (PPD) studies covered the weaning of seabass from fingerlings stage onwards and the dietary protein requirement of early grow-out fish. Dietary protein requirement of early grow-out seabass was demonstrated to be between 40-50%, at dietary lipid level of 12%, using fishmeal protein. Nevertheless fish growth was significantly higher with trashfish feed, but apparent protein retention was significantly better with formulated feed.

Tri d'alevins de loup et de dorade au stade juvénile (0,2 - 12 g) ArchiMer
Lemarie, Gilles; Gasset, Eric.
The authors present the necessary to sort catfish and sea bream fries in order to limit cannibalism, to constitute homogeneous groups. In the same time they studied different sorters (bars sorter, grating sorter and the conception of an experimental sorter) and their effects on the juveniles (behaviour). Introduction: In hatchery, early sorting of Sea Bass or Sea Bream fry after weaning can become necessary for several reasons: a) To obtain homogeneous batches thus simplifying growing management by better controlling: - Specific water flow for precise ranges of size or weight, - Food distribution granularity, - Daily feeding rate. b) To limit cannibalism which can become high when population dispersion is spread out. This dispersion greatly increases...

Selection of finfish species (seabass) as candidates for aquaculture in French Polynesia ArchiMer
Fuchs, Jacques; Gasset, Eric; Nedelec, Georges.
Species with a very high potential for aquaculture, allowing development projects on a short terms basis: the seabass originating from S.E. Asia. Species, potentially interesting but presenting some drawbacks, as difficulties to perform larval rearing or presenting pathological problem. Species considered as difficult to rear and not retained like Siganus argenteus , Siganidae or Caranx ignobilis , Carangidae. The future development of finfish in Polynesia is emphasized and a project of sea bass netcage culture in Polynesian lagoon is presented.

Effets de la salinité et de la température du milieu sur le degré de saturation des acides gras et sur les différentes catégories lipidiques des alevins de Mugil cephalus. OceanDocs
El Cafsi., M.; Kheriji., S.; Masmoudi., W.; Romdhane., M.S..

Masmoudi, W.; Romdhane, M.S.; Kheriji, S.; El Cafsi, M..

A simple test for quality evaluation of cultured fry of marine fish OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval Lates calcarifer and Siganus guttatus. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In Lates demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In Siganus on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the...

Sousa,Silia Maria de Negreiros; Freccia,André; Santos,Lilian Dena dos; Meurer,Fábio; Tessaro,Lucélia; Bombardelli,Robie Allan.
This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of different levels of digestible energy and digestible protein in diets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock on offspring growth during sex reversal stage. A total of 2,700 post-larvae (8.2±0.001 mg) derived from breeders fed nine diets with distinct levels of digestible protein (28, 34 and 40% DP) and digestible energy (2,800; 3,400; and 4,000 kcal DE.kg-1) were stored in twenty-seven 70 L tanks. After 30 days of growth, their average final weight (AFW, g), average weight gain (AWG, g), final standard length (SL, cm), condition factor (CF), specific growth rate (SGR, %/day), stock uniformity (UNI, %), survival (SUR, %) and sex reversal rate (SRR, %) were measured. Although female...
