Technical and economical analysis of a combined biogas-ethanol-biodiesel plant in Central Chile Agrociencia
Reyes-Aroca,José F.; Vidaurre-Parra,Cristian A..
The economic feasibility and the technical consistency of a system to produce biofuels were analyzed in Central Chile in the year 2010. In this study, the biodiesel, ethanol, and biogas platforms were integrated to assess the internal rate of return (IRR) and net present value (NPV) indexes. The analysis included the influence of the type of alcohol used in the manufacture of biodiesel (ethanol versus methanol), the effect of the relative size of the platform of ethanol with respect to biodiesel, and the impact of the value of main agricultural feedstocks. The study used combinations of plant sizes of10 000-20 000 m³ y -1 for ethanol, and 20 00040 000 m³ y -1 for biodiesel, and in all the cases the biogas platform was projected with a generating capacity...

Will Higher Shipping Costs Drive the U.S. to Source More Localized Produce? AgEcon
Woods, Timothy A.; Saghaian, Sayed H.; Ona, Lucia Y..
The recent wide fluctuations in diesel fuel costs and subsequent trucking costs has raised speculation within the produce industry of potential structural shifts in the location of production. Recent increases in demand for local produce seem to further support speculation toward this end. A component pricing model is used to actually examine the impact of fuel prices on farm gate and retail produce prices for strawberries, lettuce, and potatoes. The study finds that distribution costs, while significantly increasing in absolute value, have surprisingly little contribution to changes in retail prices even in markets distant to the primary production regions. These results suggest that factors other than lower distribution costs for local produce will...
