Postprandial symptoms in dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia are not related to disturbances of gastric myoelectrical activity BJMBR
Oba-Kuniyoshi,A.S.; Oliveira Jr.,J.A.; Moraes,E.R.; Troncon,L.E.A..
Gastric dysrhythmias, such as tachy- or bradygastria, have been reported in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD), but their role in symptom production is uncertain. It is also not known whether gastric dysrhythmias in these patients can be elicited by physiological gastric distension with a meal. We investigated the relationships between symptoms after ingestion of different volumes of water following a test meal and gastric dysrhythmias in FD patients. Fourteen patients with dysmotility-like FD and 13 healthy volunteers underwent paired electrogastrography (EGG) studies. Fasted subjects ingested 150 ml of yoghurt with either 150 ml (low volume) or 300 ml (high volume) water in random order. Fasting and fed EGGs with monitoring of symptoms were...

Detection of patients with functional dyspepsia using wavelet transform applied to their electrogastrogram BJMBR
Chacón,M.; Curilem,G.; Acuña,G.; Defilippi,C.; Madrid,A.M.; Jara,S..
The aim of the present study was to develop a classifier able to discriminate between healthy controls and dyspeptic patients by analysis of their electrogastrograms. Fifty-six electrogastrograms were analyzed, corresponding to 42 dyspeptic patients and 14 healthy controls. The original signals were subsampled, filtered and divided into the pre-, post-, and prandial stages. A time-frequency transformation based on wavelets was used to extract the signal characteristics, and a special selection procedure based on correlation was used to reduce their number. The analysis was carried out by evaluating different neural network structures to classify the wavelet coefficients into two groups (healthy subjects and dyspeptic patients). The optimization process of...

Functional dyspepsia: relationship between clinical subgroups and Helicobacter pylori status in Western Turkey BJMBR
Saruc,M.; Ozden,N.; Turkel,N.; Ayhan,S.; Demir,M.A.; Tuzcuoglu,I.; Akarca,U.S.; Yuceyar,H..
The etiology of functional dyspepsia is not known. The objective of the present study was to determine the characteristics of functional dyspepsia in Western Turkey. We divided 900 patients with functional dyspepsia into three subgroups according to symptoms: ulcer-like (UL), 321 (35.6%), motility disorder-like (ML), 281 (31.2%), and the combination (C) of these symptoms, 298 (33.1%). All patients were submitted to endoscopic evaluation, with two biopsies taken from the cardia and corpus, and four from the antrum of the stomach. All biopsy samples were studied for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) density, chronic inflammation, activity, intestinal metaplasia, atrophy, and the presence of lymphoid aggregates by histological examination. One antral biopsy was used...
