A participatory scenario method to explore the future of marine social-ecological systems ArchiMer

Anticipating future changes in marine social‐ecological systems (MSES) several decades into the future is essential in the context of accelerating global change. This is challenging in situations where actors do not share common understandings, practices, or visions about the future. We introduce a dedicated scenario method for the development of MSES scenarios in a participatory context. The objective is to allow different actors to jointly develop scenarios which contain their multiple visions of the future. The method starts from four perspectives: “fisheries management,” “ecosystem,” “ocean climate,” and “global context and governance” for which current status and recent trends are summarized. Contrasted scenarios about possible futures are elaborated...

What we don’t know about megapodes Naturalis
Jones, D.N..
While the growth in megapode studies has been extraordinary, much remains to be done. Further work is especially crucial if the many conservation projects that are planned and underway are to be based on a sound and reliable base of understanding. Thus, the ten projects proposed here are not directly conservation-orientated. Rather, they are aimed at elucidating aspects and issues that are needed for a more complete understanding of these remarkable birds. In particular, a plea is made for high quality natural history and for cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Comparative two-dimensional gel electrophoresis maps for promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania major BJID
Brobey,Reynolds K. B.; Mei,Fang C.; Cheng,Xiaodong; Soong,Lynn.
The outcome of Leishmania infections is determined by both the parasite species and the host genetic makeup. While much has been learned regarding immune responses to this parasite, our knowledge on parasite-derived factors is limited. The recent completion of the L. major and L. infantum genome sequence projects and concurrent advancement in proteomics technology would greatly accelerate the search for novel Leishmania proteins. Using a proteomics-based approach to study species-specific Leishmania proteins, we developed high-resolution, broad pH (3-10) two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) separations to determine protein-expression profiles between highly infectious forms of the parasitic species L. amazonensis (New World) and L. major (Old World)....
