Hake Merluccius hubbsi fecundity was estimated with the gravimetric method using ovaries with hydrated oocytes without post-ovulatory follicles. Samples were obtained in three research cruises in the Argentine Sea, off Chubut Province, SW of Peninsula Valdes between 42°S and 45°S, near Isla Escondida, during December 1993, 1994 and 1996, time which coincides with the most important reproductive activity. Relative fecundity values were 722 plus or minus 107, 606 plus or minus 60 and 533 plus or minus 26 oocytes per gram of female without ovaries, respectively. Spawning and reproductive variables of the northern hake stock were analyzed using macroscopic and histologic gonad information derived from samples collected in May 2009. The study includes estimates of batch fecundity, spawning frequency, oocyte dry weight and size at first maturity. During May 2009 the reproductive activity of the northern hake stock took place mainly near the 50 m isobath, north of 37° S. Spawning occurred within a temperature range of 9 °C-15 °C that coincided with a bottom thermal front. In this work we present a process of risk analysis related to the adoption of a Total Allowable Catch (TAC)based in series of allowable biological catches which contain uncertainty derived of the recruitment patterns which characterize the stock. With the information obtained by the F0,1, and F30. RDP, the exploitation ratio and with the 500 values of the projected biomass of 1995 obtained by Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the distribution of the allowable biological catches under a scheme of F0,1, and F30. Based on the comparison between length composition of landings and that of research cruises, filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet, to rebuild length distribution of catches, an indirect quantitative method was developed and used to estimate, in weight and number, the individuals discarded by the commercial fleet south of 41° S. Discards ranged between 15,563 and 46,113 annual tons in the 1986-1993 period which represented 10-13% in weight and 28-32% in number of actual catches, composed of around 87% of individuals age group 1, 12% of age group 2 and the rest of individuals age groups 0 and 3. |

The activity of fishing fleets for hake Merluccius hubbsi south of 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic, is described. In order to establish the standard group of vessels, density indices derived from research cruises and ice-chilling fleets were related. Group four 1,400-1,800 HP related better to the abundance trend. Also, two series of indices associated to different fractions of the population were estimated: juveniles age 2) and adults age 3-5. Finally, a total catch per unit effort CPUE for the region south of 41°S, which showed a declining trend during the period considered 1991-1997, was calculated. |

The Patagonian grenadier Macruronus magellanicus fishery reached the maximum exploitation in the argentine fishery in 1988 with a catch of 154,960 t, decreasing gradually in the current decade. Statistical data confirm this trend and consider a total catch of22,796,3 t for 1995. The regulations establish a minimum of 120 mm inside codend mesh size for demersal species in Argentine sea. Since 1990, the Argentine commercial fleet directed to hake (Merluccius hubbsi) has obtained more than 70 of catches South of 41°S while to the North of this latitude the activity concentrated between 39°S and 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. Bearing in mind the different characteristics of ice-chilling and freezer fleets, their activities were analyzed separately. Considering the relative percentages of catches declared in fishery statistics, the dynamics of each fleet is described per quarter and year. The evolution of argentine landings, characteristics of trawl fleets, principal ports, landings per fleet and management unit (north and south of 41°S), areas and fishing seasons are described. Main results show a continuous increase of argentine hake landings as of 1987. Freezers, that operated in the Patagonian zone along the whole year, was the fleet that most contributed to said increase while the ice chilling fleet maintained its level of landings in the period considered.
