Estimating price elasticities of food trade functions: How relevant is the gravity approach? AgEcon

The main objective of the paper is related to the long standing issue of the econometric estimation of price elasticity of food trade functions. We investigate the relevance of the prominent gravity approach. This approach is based on the assumptions of symmetric, monotone, homothetic, CES preferences. We test all these assumptions using European intra trade of cheese. In a general way, all assumptions made on preferences by the gravity approach are not supported by our data set. The bias induced on the estimated price elasticities is not univocal.

Micro-Demand Systems Analysis of Non-Alcoholic Beverages in the United States: An Application of Econometric Techniques Dealing With Censoring AgEcon

A censored Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and a Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) were estimated in modeling non-alcoholic beverages. Five estimation techniques were used, including the conventional Iterated Seemingly Unrelated Regression (ITSUR), two-stage methods such as the Heien and Wessells (1990) and the Shonkwiler and Yen (1999) approaches, the generalized maximum entropy method and the Amemiya-Tobin framework of Dong, Gould and Kaiser (2004). Our results based on various specifications and estimation techniques are quantitatively similar and indicate that price elasticity estimates have a greater variability in more highly censored non-alcoholic beverage items such as tea, coffee and bottled water as opposed to less censored...

INFERRING THE NUTRIENT CONTENT OF FOOD WITH PRIOR INFORMATION AgEcon

Given measurements on the nutrient content of the U.S. food supply and a coherent reduced form empirical model of the demand for foods, we can analyze the effect of agricultural farm and food policy on nutrition. Using unpublished documents from the HNIS, estimates of the percentages of seventeen nutrients supplied by twenty-one foods were compiled for the period 1952-1983. The Bayesian Method of Moments is applied to this data set to obtain a proper prior for the purpose of drawing year-to-year inferences about the nutrient content of the U.S. food supply for the period 1909-1994. Information theory and the Kullback-Leibler cross entropy criterion are used to formalize the inference problem.
