Selection of interspecific Psidium spp. hybrids resistant to Meloidogyne enterolobii Agronomy
Ribeiro, Rodrigo Moreira; Martins Gomes, Vicente; Pio Viana, Alexandre; Moreira Souza, Ricardo; Santos, Paulo Ricardo dos.
Since 2001, the disease known as 'guava decline', resulting from the interaction between the phytonematode Meloidogyne enterolobii and the fungus Fusarium solanie, has caused direct and indirect economic losses to the entire guava production chain. Given the lack of sources of resistance in guava genotypes, interspecific hybrids of Psidium spp. were obtained for resistance to the nematode M. enterolobii. To classify the level of resistance of the interspecific hybrids, we evaluated the plant classification methodologies proposed by Oostenbrink (1966) and Moura and Régis (1987). Estimates of genetic parameters were obtained using the REML/BLUP approach. Interspecific hybrids resistant to M. enterolobii were selected that can be used as rootstocks or in new...

Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary. I. Host-Pathogen specificity and resistance components Agrociencia
Lozoya-Saldaña,Héctor; Guzmán-Galindo,Leonel; Fernández-Pavia,Sylvia; Grünwald,Niklaus J.; McElhinny,Elaine.
Abstract The molecular identity of Phytophthora infestans strains infecting potatoes in the Toluca Valley has been documented. Nevertheless, the relationship of the P. infestans genotypes to the host’s genetic resistance is unclear. In order to identify potential host-pathogen specificity, isolates of the oomycete obtained from five potato varieties with differing levels of disease resistance were compared regarding mating type (MT), isozyme genotype for glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Gpi) and peptidase (Pep), and sensitivity to metalaxyl. Also, host resistance components and specificity on the host-pathogen interaction were assessed twice in detached leaves in the laboratory and once in attached leaves in the greenhouse for three of the varieties. No...

Kurosawa,Railan do Nascimento Ferreira; Vivas,Marcelo; Amaral,Antonio Teixeira do; Ribeiro,Rodrigo Moreira; Miranda,Samila Barbosa; Pena,Guilherme Ferreira; Leite,Jhean Torres; Mora,Freddy.
ABSTRACT Compared with the common corn, popcorn shows greater susceptibility to pests and diseases occurrence, being the use of resistant cultivars the most efficient strategy. In this regard, Germplasm Banks deserve special attention because they contain accessions that can be used as sources of resistance in breeding programs. The State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) maintains a popcorn Germplasm Bank with accessions from tropical and temperate countries, including Diversity Centers for the species. In this study, we investigated the performance of 37 popcorn accessions landraces, hybrids, and inbreed lines ― from the Germplasm Collection of UENF’s Popcorn Breeding Program with respect to the fungal leaf diseases northern leaf blight (NLB)...

Cytokines produced by susceptible and resistant mice in the course of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection BJMBR
Calich,V.L.G.; Kashino,S.S..
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the most prevalent deep mycosis in Latin America and presents a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. We established a genetically controlled murine model of PCM, where A/Sn mice develop an infection which mimics the benign disease (immune responses which favor cellular immunity) and B10.A animals present the progressive disseminated form of PCM (preferential activation of B cells and impairment of cellular immune responses). To understand the immunoregulatory phenomena associated with resistance and susceptibility in experimental PCM, A/Sn and B10.A mice were studied regarding antigen-elicited secretion of monokines (TNF-<FONT FACE="Symbol">a</font> and TGF-ß) and type-1 (IL-2 and IFN-<FONT...

Resistance of potato clones to necrotic recombinant strains of potato virus y (pvy) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ribeiro,Silvia Regina Rodrigues de Paula; Pinto,César Augusto Brasil Pereira; Costa,Suellen Bárbara Ferreira Galvino; Menezes,Mariney de; Figueira,Antonia dos Reis.
The Ry adg allele is widely used by breeders to confer extreme resistance to all strains of PVY. However, the necrotic strain has increased recombination resulting in recent considerable losses in productivity. Thus far, not all necrotic recombinant strains of PVY have been tested for their reaction to the Ry gene. The objective of this study was to identify potato clones carrying the resistant allele and to assess their reaction to the following recombinant strains: NTN (PVY NTN), Wilga (PVY N-Wi), and "curly top" (PVY E). Advanced clones from the potato breeding program at Universidade Federal de Lavras were evaluated through a specific molecular marker for the Ry adg allele. The clones carrying the resistance allele were grafted on tobacco plants...

CHEMICAL CONTROL OF ASIAN SOYBEAN RUST AS A FUNCTION OF CULTIVAR, ROW SPACING AND SPRAY BAR SUPPORT SYSTEMS REA
Hoffmann,Laercio L.; Roehrig,Rafael; Boller,Walter; Forcelini,Carlos A..
ABSTRACT Product deposition and foliar surface cover are highly impacting factors on the efficiency of foliar fungicides applied to soybean cultivars, due to their low mobility, with side effects on Asian soybean rust (ASR) control. Spray bar support systems, such as the air curtain (Vortex®) and the use of nozzles along the bar (Dropleg®), stand out as an alternative to obtain a better distribution of fungicide throughout the plant. In this study, two spray bar support systems (Vortex® and Dropleg®) were, therefore, evaluated and compared with the conventional spraying method based on the biological efficacy in ASR control. In order to do this, two harvests, with three spacing between rows and two cultivars were employed. Vortex® and Dropleg® spray bar...

Effect of polymorphisms in the Slc11a1 coding region on resistance to brucellosis by macrophages in vitro and after challenge in two Bos breeds (Blanco Orejinegro and Zebu) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martínez,Rodrigo; Dunner,Susana; Toro,Rubén; Tobón,Jaime; Gallego,Jaime; Cañón,Javier.
The resistance/susceptibility of selected cattle breeds to brucellosis was evaluated in an F1 population generated by crossing animals classified as resistant (R) and susceptible (S) (R x R, R x S, S x R, S x S) based on challenges in vitro and in vivo. The association between single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in the coding region of the Slc11a1 gene and resistance/susceptibility was estimated. The trait resistance or susceptibility to brucellosis, evaluated by a challenge in vitro, showed a high heritable component in terms of additive genetic variance (h² = 0.54 ± 0.11). In addition, there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between the control of bacterial survival and two polymorphisms (a 3'UTR and SNP4 located in exon 10). The...

Genetic control of Eucalyptus urophylla and E. grandis resistance to canker caused by Chrysoporthe cubensis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Guimarães,Lúcio Mauro da Silva; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Lau,Douglas; Rosse,Leonardo Novaes; Alves,Alexandre Alonso; Alfenas,Acelino Couto.
Chrysophorte cubensis induced canker occurs in nearly all tropical and subtropical regions where eucalypts are planted, causing losses in both wood quality and volume productivity, especially so in the warmer and more humid regions of Brazil. The wide inter and intra-specific genetic variability of resistance to canker among Eucalyptus species facilitates the selection of resistant plants. In this study, we evaluated resistance to this pathogen in five Eucalyptus grandis (G) and 15 E. urophylla (U) trees, as well as in 495 individuals from 27 progenies derived from crosses between the trees. In the field, six-months-old test seedlings were inoculated with C. cubensis. Lesion length in the xylem and bark was measured eight months later. The results...

Reaction of melon genotypes to Rhizoctonia solani Horticultura Brasileira
Michereff,Sami J; Andrade,Domingos EGT; Sales Júnior,Rui.
The intensive exploration of melon (Cucumis melo L.) crops in the Brazilian Northeast favors the occurrence of root diseases such as the Rhizoctonia canker, caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Twenty melon genotypes were challenged against the pathogen isolates RS-9 and RS-10 aiming at selecting those potentially useful for breeding programs and/or integrated disease management. Seeds were planted in infested soil (50 mg of colonized rice grains kg-1 of soil). Disease severity was assessed 15 days after inoculation, by means of a disease scale from 0 to 4, used later to cluster genotypes in five classes. None of the genotypes presented immune-like reaction to R. solani, independent of the pathogen isolate. Disease severity ranged from 6.2 to 85.4% and from 7.8...
