Since 2001, the disease known as 'guava decline', resulting from the interaction between the phytonematode Meloidogyne enterolobii and the fungus Fusarium solanie, has caused direct and indirect economic losses to the entire guava production chain. Given the lack of sources of resistance in guava genotypes, interspecific hybrids of Psidium spp. were obtained for resistance to the nematode M. enterolobii. To classify the level of resistance of the interspecific hybrids, we evaluated the plant classification methodologies proposed by Oostenbrink (1966) and Moura and Régis (1987). Estimates of genetic parameters were obtained using the REML/BLUP approach. Interspecific hybrids resistant to M. enterolobii were selected that can be used as rootstocks or in new... |

Abstract The molecular identity of Phytophthora infestans strains infecting potatoes in the Toluca Valley has been documented. Nevertheless, the relationship of the P. infestans genotypes to the host’s genetic resistance is unclear. In order to identify potential host-pathogen specificity, isolates of the oomycete obtained from five potato varieties with differing levels of disease resistance were compared regarding mating type (MT), isozyme genotype for glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Gpi) and peptidase (Pep), and sensitivity to metalaxyl. Also, host resistance components and specificity on the host-pathogen interaction were assessed twice in detached leaves in the laboratory and once in attached leaves in the greenhouse for three of the varieties. No... |

ABSTRACT Compared with the common corn, popcorn shows greater susceptibility to pests and diseases occurrence, being the use of resistant cultivars the most efficient strategy. In this regard, Germplasm Banks deserve special attention because they contain accessions that can be used as sources of resistance in breeding programs. The State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) maintains a popcorn Germplasm Bank with accessions from tropical and temperate countries, including Diversity Centers for the species. In this study, we investigated the performance of 37 popcorn accessions landraces, hybrids, and inbreed lines ― from the Germplasm Collection of UENF’s Popcorn Breeding Program with respect to the fungal leaf diseases northern leaf blight (NLB)... |

ABSTRACT Product deposition and foliar surface cover are highly impacting factors on the efficiency of foliar fungicides applied to soybean cultivars, due to their low mobility, with side effects on Asian soybean rust (ASR) control. Spray bar support systems, such as the air curtain (Vortex®) and the use of nozzles along the bar (Dropleg®), stand out as an alternative to obtain a better distribution of fungicide throughout the plant. In this study, two spray bar support systems (Vortex® and Dropleg®) were, therefore, evaluated and compared with the conventional spraying method based on the biological efficacy in ASR control. In order to do this, two harvests, with three spacing between rows and two cultivars were employed. Vortex® and Dropleg® spray bar... |

The resistance/susceptibility of selected cattle breeds to brucellosis was evaluated in an F1 population generated by crossing animals classified as resistant (R) and susceptible (S) (R x R, R x S, S x R, S x S) based on challenges in vitro and in vivo. The association between single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in the coding region of the Slc11a1 gene and resistance/susceptibility was estimated. The trait resistance or susceptibility to brucellosis, evaluated by a challenge in vitro, showed a high heritable component in terms of additive genetic variance (h² = 0.54 ± 0.11). In addition, there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between the control of bacterial survival and two polymorphisms (a 3'UTR and SNP4 located in exon 10). The... |

Chrysophorte cubensis induced canker occurs in nearly all tropical and subtropical regions where eucalypts are planted, causing losses in both wood quality and volume productivity, especially so in the warmer and more humid regions of Brazil. The wide inter and intra-specific genetic variability of resistance to canker among Eucalyptus species facilitates the selection of resistant plants. In this study, we evaluated resistance to this pathogen in five Eucalyptus grandis (G) and 15 E. urophylla (U) trees, as well as in 495 individuals from 27 progenies derived from crosses between the trees. In the field, six-months-old test seedlings were inoculated with C. cubensis. Lesion length in the xylem and bark was measured eight months later. The results... |

The fungus Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of target spot in cucumber. Under favorable climatic conditions it can cause serious damage in this horticultural crop. In Brazil, there exists not enough knowledge to determine efficient control measures to the disease. This investigation was carried out to evaluate: a) the reactions of nine cucumber hybrids to C. cassiicola; b) the sensibility of six isolates of C. cassiicola to fungicides in vitro (captan, chlorothalonil, mancozeb, azoxystrobin, difenoconazole, carbendazin, tebuconazole and thiophanate-methyl), used in concentrations of 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 µg mL-1 of active ingredient and c) protective and curative chemical treatments with the same fungicides used in vitro in cucumber plants... |

ABSTRACT Resistant rootstocks is one of the most effective method to control soilborne pathogens in tomato crops. Thus, this study was installed to evaluate the reaction of Solanum stramonifolium accesses to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol) races 2 and 3 and to Meloidogyne enterolobii (Me). The seedlings were grown in trays and inoculated separately with Fol races 2 and 3 at 50 days after planting by immersing the roots in the spore suspension (1×106 microconidia mL-1). Then, seedlings were transplanted in pots containing sterilized soil and kept in greenhouse conditions. To study the reaction of S. stramonifolium accesses to nematodes, we used 27-day old seedlings that were also planted in pots and inoculated with 6,000 eggs and second-stage... |

ABSTRACT Bacterial wilt limits tomato production and resistant rootstocks could be important for the integrated management of the disease. Since there is an interaction between local bacterial strains and tomato genotype, this study aimed to evaluate 14 tomato rootstocks to bacterial wilt in the Mata mesoregion of Pernambuco state, Brazil. The rootstocks reaction to two sequevars of Ralstonia solanacearum and two of R. pseudosolanacearum was evaluated in four experiments carried out in the greenhouse using the completely randomized experimental design, with four replications composed of four plants each. Seven genotypes were selected to evaluate the reaction to bacterial wilt as rootstocks grafting in tomato plants ‘Tomini F1’ in a production area with... |

ABSTRACT Onion’s (Allium cepa) slippery skin caused by Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola is one of the bacterial diseases that stand out in producing regions of the Brazilian Northeast. Given the importance and potential threat of this disease, and the absence of resistant varieties, the aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of onion genotypes to slippery skin and to analyze the tolerance stability of the most promising genotypes to different strains of the bacteria. Nine strains of B. gladioli pv. alliicola were artificially inoculated in onion bulbs cv. Baia Periforme and the three most aggressive strains (CCRMBG39, CCRMBG172 and CCRMBG212) were selected to evaluate the tolerance to the disease. Fifty-eight onion genotypes were challenged with... |
