In general, the characteristics of organic varieties - and by extension of organic plant breeding - differ from that of conventional breeding systems and conventional varieties. Realising an organic plant breeding system and subsequently steering it to meet changing demands is no less than a mammoth task. The many actions to be undertaken can be divided into short-term commercial and scientific activities, and longer or long-term commercial and scientific activities. Action must be taken in the short-term to ensure adequate quantities of organically propagated plants and seed. This is vital in consideration of Regulation 2092/91/EC which states that, as of 1 January 2000, all propagating material used in organic production must be of organic origin.... |

When it comes to discussions on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and organic agriculture, biotechnologists often ask: “Why are your rules so strict? Why ban GMOs when they are the only tool to secure the world’s future need for food? They are more efficient, quicker, etc!” When asked these questions I explain the underlying values of organic agriculture. In this article I will discuss the basic values of organic agriculture as laid down in the IFOAM four basic principles, and will relate them to the field of plant breeding. I also discuss the consequences and challenges for the further development of organic plant breeding. |

This proceedings summarize the results of the first EUCARPIA symposium on Organic Plant Breeding - Plant breeding for organic and sustainable, low-input agriculture: dealing with genotype-environment interactions - that took place in Wageningen in November 2007. EUCARPIA is the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding. One of the major constraints in organic farming is that farmers still largely depend on crop varieties produced for conventional farming systems with high inputs of artificial, mineral fertilisers and chemicals for crop defence. Therefore, the organic sector urgently requires breeding programmes for robust varieties, which are better adapted to low-input conditions, with traits such as improved root systems, stronger... |

Fifty-five spring barley varieties from the German official varieties list were tested for their susceptibility to loose smut (Ustilago nuda) and covered smut (Ustilago hordei) under a simulation of natural infection conditions. For loose smut infection cv. ‘Lawina’ with about 5 % infected plants was used as spreader. In the trial with covered smut 1kg of seeds were shaken with 1g of spores to contaminate the surface of barley seeds before sowing. Only ‘Steffi’ stayed absolutely free from loose smut during two infection cycles at two locations. With an average of 12.6 % plants with loose smut ‘Danuta’ was the most susceptible. Most susceptible to covered smut were ‘Tunika’ with 13.2 % and hulless ‘Taiga’ with 15 % infected plants. Thirteen varieties... |

According to the Council Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 seed and vegetative plant material for organic farming shall be organic. Until 31th december 2003, the competent authority in a member state may give a derogation for this if suitable organic seed is not available. The EU Commission reviews the requirements for seed and other propagating material at the latest by 31th december 2002. This report give an overview of the rules for production of organic seed in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden). The production of organic seed is described for each country. In januar 2002, organic seed production was discussed at a workshop in Copenhagen as a part of this project. Special problems discussed in this report are; national... |
