The objectives of this project (Defra project OF0144), lead by EFRC, were to: • identify acceptable organic fungicide products to control mildew in transplant production • produce integrated organic transplant production systems for brassica, allium and lettuce over the autumn and winter period by identifying optimum cell/block sizes in relation to nutrient requirements and sources, growing media formulation, and supplementary feeding and watering • evaluate developed transplant production protocols during the winter period • undertake technology transfer and dissemination of the results Results: Protocols were tested for a range of crop species and varieties, growing media, cell size and feeding regimes over the three seasons under experimental... |

Description The main objective of the work is to investigate the suitability of selected varieties of vegetables and potatoes for organic production. The organic vegetable market has increased rapidly over recent years and is continuing to increase in size. Market specifications are also continually tightening. Organic growing of vegetables and potatoes imposes severe restrictions on the treatments which growers can apply to crops to maximise yield and maintain quality while conforming to organic standards. Hence choice of variety is more critical in organic situations than for conventional crops where problems can be solved at a later date by application of pesticides or fertilisers. Varieties are needed that can respond to the conditions organic systems... |

A recent report has revealed that organic vegetable growers experience a number of technical plant raising problems (including lack of confidence in plant raising materials and lack of consensus about optimum plant raising strategies) while attempting to comply with EC regulation 2092/91. The overall objective of this study will be to improve the ability of organic producers to raise transplants according to the requirements of this EC Regulation. The specific objectives of the study will be: identification of the key interactions between the critical factors involved in transplant propagation (cabbage, lettuce and leek) in order to contribute to the development of improved management practices during the life of the project; and improvement of the... |

This study will aim to establish whether crop varieties require dedicated organic trials or whether advice on their performance under organic conditions can be extrapolated from conventional trial data. A number of varieties from different vegetable types will be selected for their expected suitability for production under organic conditions. Selected varieties will be used in trials examining parameters such as speed of emergence and establishment, total and marketable yields, quality attributes, pest resistance and incidence of disease. The establishment of reliable data with these crops will allow additional advice to be provided to organic growers on the most appropriate variety and husbandry techniques to obtain maximum marketable yield of good... |
