Defoliator caterpillars were collected in plantations of avocado in several areas Venda Nova do Imigrante, state of "Espírito Santo", Brazil. These caterpillars were sent to the laboratory of Entomology of the Agricultural Center of the Federal University of "Espírito Santo", in Alegre, of Espírito Santo, Brazil where they were reared until adult stage. Adults obtained were identified as belonging to the family Geometrid, subfamily Ennominae, species Nipteria panacea Thierry-Mieg, 1892, which was not yet reported as pest of any crop in Brazil. |

Aleiodes Wesmael is the most diverse rogadine genus, with koinobiont endoparasitic development in Lepidoptera caterpillars resulting in mummification of the host remains. Aleiodes japi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Type specimens of the new species were reared from Physocleora grosica and Ischnopteris sp. (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Ennominae) larvae. Host larvae were collected on Alchornea triplinervia (Euphorbiaceae) at the Reserva Biológica Municipal da Serra do Japi, Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. This is the second species of circumscriptus/gastritror group described from Brazil. |

Prey identification in nests of the potter wasp Hypodynerus andeus (Packard) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) using DNA barcodes. Geometrid larvae are the only prey known for larvae of the Neotropical potter wasp Hypodynerus andeus (Packard, 1869) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) in the coastal valleys of the northern Chilean Atacama Desert. A fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 was amplified from geometrid larvae collected from cells of H. andeus in the Azapa Valley, Arica Province, and used to provide taxonomic identifications. Two species, Iridopsis hausmanni Vargas, 2007 and Macaria mirthae Vargas, Parra & Hausmann, 2005 were identified, while three others could be identified only at higher taxonomic levels,... |

BACKGROUND: Host plant specificity refers to the preference of insects for particular plant species that allow them to complete their life cycle. Moth species of the Geometridae family depend closely on the vegetation composition to complete their life cycles. In northern Chile, the Geometridae species Glena mielkei is the only species described of the genus Glena. So far, this species has only been associated to a single host plan species of the Asteraceae family, Trixis cacalioides. The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of five commonly occurring plant species of Asteraceae as hosts for G. mielkei. FINDINGS: We collected G. mielkei larvae from T. cacalioides plants occurring in the Azapa valley and reared them in the laboratory. We... |

This paper relates to the first case of Pinus patula defoliation by Fulgurodes sartinaria Guenée, 1857 (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fieldand laboratory studies showed that F. sartinaria is a voraceus species with high biotic potential. Avarage egg laying by female was 180.82 with 22.34±7.36% and 12.91±0.11 days of egg viability and incubation period, respectively. Larval period passed through five instars with a mean of 78.56±1.91 days. Pre-pupal and pupal stages had a mean period of 3.3±0.24 and 20.70±2.05 days, respectively. Males and females were very similar in appearance, with 12.88±0.92 and 12.00± 1.65 days of adult live, respectivelly. It were found an identified egg parasite and Brachymeria sp. pupal parasite. |

The genus Cundinamarca Rindge, 1983 (Geometridae, Ennominae, Nacophorini) is studied. Erilophodes indistincta Warren, 1904, Ischnopteris subalbata Dognin, 1910 and Ischnopteris nigralbata Dognin, 1913 are placed under Cundinamarca comb.n.. Two new synonyms are established: Isclmoplerix subalbata whiíei Prout, 1934 is a júnior synonym of Ischnopteris subalbata Dognin, 1910; Cundinamarca parallela Rindge, 1983 is a júnior synonym of Ischnopteris nigralbata Dognin, 1913. A new species is described: Cundinamarca rindgei. The genus is first time recorded from Brazil and Paraguay. |
