The European diesel fuel specification limits the biodiesel content to 7 %. It is, however, desirable to increase the amount of renewables in the transport sector; therefore blending with a higher biogenic fuel content is of interest. Blending of fuels can lead to chemical reactions between fuel components and may result in undesired products. In detail, aged biodiesel from unsaturated FAME and fossil diesel fuels can form oligomers and precipitations with a maximum in the range of B10 to B20. Precursors are oligomers that can be separated from the biodiesel or the blends in an amount of up to 20 %. These oligomers seem to have potency for chemical reactions with fuel components or the engine oil. To prevent tentative problems in the fuel filter, the... |

Cultural landscapes are appreciated for the plethora of ecosystem services that they provide to society. They are, however, subject to rapid and fundamental transformations across Europe, mainly as a result of intensification or abandonment of land uses. Our objective is to assess the possible future drivers of cultural landscape changes and their likely impacts on ecosystem services provision as perceived by local actors. We present stakeholder-based scenarios for the Swabian Alb, a biosphere reserve in southern Germany, projected to the yr 2040. On their basis, we explore the possibilities and limitations of local civil engagement for landscape conservation and development in the face of increasing global influences. The steps of the process are (a)... |

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007) indicates that vulnerable industries should adapt to the increasing likelihood of extreme weather events along with slowly shifting mean annual temperatures and precipitation patterns, to prevent major damages or periods of inoperability in the future. Most articles in the literature on business management frame organizational adaptation to climate change as a private action. This makes adaptation the sole responsibility of a company, for its sole benefit, and overlooks the fact that some companies provide critical goods and services such a food, water, electricity, and medical care, that are so vital to society that even a short-term setback in operations could put public security at risk. This raises... |

Slug assemblages in NW Germany (Gastropoda: Milacidae, Boettgerillidae, Limacidae, Agriolimacidae, Arionidae): a result of the mapping survey of Northrhine-Westphalia. This survey provides information on inter-specific associations of slugs on a regional data base. Most of the data originate from the last ten years. In total, 25 slug species are known from the federal state Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany. A rough classification using two character species resulted in three groups. These groups correspond to habitat preferences, i.e. species that are regularly found together with Arion rufus usually occur in close-canopy forests and mid-successional stages, species that are regularly found together with Arion lusitanicus prefer open habitats to... |

Introduction Research of Miocene and Pliocene insectivores has a long history in Germany. Already in the middle of the 19th century Miocene insectivore species have been described from South German localities. Most of these were authored by Herman von Meyer, who deserves to be named a pioneer of German insectivores research. Weisenau, today part of the city of Mainz, is the type locality of Dimylus paradoxus described by von Meyer (1846:473). Haslach near Ulm yielded the type of Cordylodon haslachensis, also described by von Meyer (1859: 174). The widely known Steinheim fauna yielded among others the type of Parasorex socialis, again described by von Meyer (1865:884). Von Meyer often received fossils from private collectors for determination. Usually, he... |

Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, 1905 is for the first time reported from Europe: the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent Germany. DNA barcodes confirm its identity. It is the first North American lepidopteranspecies feeding on northern red oak Quercus rubra ever found in Europe, and only the second North American oak-feeding insect found in Europe. The species has regularly been found in the Netherlands and northern Belgium since 2006, and in 2011 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, adjacent to the Dutch border, but the earliest records are from the Netherlands, Amersfoort in 1989 and 1990. Early stages, leafmines, and the adult are described, illustrated, and diagnosed against oak-feeding Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848 and other similar species.... |

The European species of the subgenus Aliolus Say, 1836, of the genus Eubazus Nees, 1814, and of the genus Dicyrtaspis van Achterberg, 1980 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Brachistinae) are reviewed. The identity of Triaspis thomsoni Fahringer, 1934, and the interpretation by S˘ noflák (1953) are discussed. A lectotype is designated for T. thomsoni, a neotype for the types species of Aliolus Say, 1836 (Bracon trilobatus Say, 1836) and T. thomsoni sensu Šnoflák is described as a new species (Eubazus nigroventralis spec. nov.) from Bulgaria, Germany and Czech Republic. Two new species of the E. lepidus-group are described and illustrated (E. punctifer cpec. nov. from Bulgaria and E. planifacialis spec. nov. from The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden). In addition, a... |

During the Bremerhaven Workshop, the meiofaunal communities along 2 supposed North Sea pollution gradients, one at a drilling site off the Dutch coast and the other across the German Bight, were analysed by a variety of univariate and multivariate techniques and the changes on community structure related to a suite of measured environmental variables. At the drilling site the only evidence of change in community structure was a slight reduction in the abundance of nematodes in the deeper parts of the sediment (2 to 10 cm) close to the drilling site. Otherwise, there were no significant differences between sites using any other measure of community structure. It is concluded that sufficient time had elapsed since the cessation of drilling activity for a... |

Concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O), oxygen, nitrate, and ammonium, as well as nitrification activity were determined along the salinity gradient of the Schelde Estuary, Northwest Europe, in October 1993, March 1994, and July 1996, The entire estuary was always supersaturated with N2O. Concentrations ranged from 338 nmol dm-3 (31 times supersaturated) in the O2-poor upper estuary, down to about 10 nmol dm-3 (slight supersaturation) at the mouth of the estuary. Nearly all N2O was lost to the atmosphere within the estuary rather than being transported to the open sea. The mean annual emission from the Schelde estuary to... |
