Ginkgo biloba Effects on Mice Fetal Liver International Journal of Morphology
Zehra,Uruj; Tahir,Mohammad; Jaffery,Fahim H; Lone,Khalid P.
Ginkgo biloba is considered to be an alternative drug for various indications; unfortunately very few studies are available on its side effects. This present study describes the harmful effects of Ginkgo biloba on developing fetal liver. Two experimental groups of six pregnant female mice each were given Ginkgo biloba at human therapeutic dose (A) and a higher dose (B) throughout the gestation period. A third group (C) was taken as a control and given distilled water only. Fetal livers were examined and the effects of the drug observed. There were signs of congestion and fatty change along with dilatation of sinusoids in a dose dependent manner concluding that Ginkgo biloba affects fetal liver.

Evaluation of the anti-osteoporotic effect of Ginkgo biloba L. in Wistar rats with glucocorticoid-induced-osteoporosis by bone densitometry using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and mechanical testing Anais da ABC (AABC)
LUCINDA,LEDA M.F.; AARESTRUP,BEATRIZ J.V.; REBOREDO,MAYCON M.; PAINS,THAIS D.A.; CHAVES,RAPHAEL Z.; REIS,JOÃO E.P.; LOUZADA,MÁRIO J.Q.; GUERRA,MARTHA O..
ABSTRACT Evaluate the effect of the extract of Ginkgo biloba in the bone alkaline phosphatase, bone mineral density, in the mechanical properties of the tibia in rats with glucocorticoid-induced-osteoporosis. After osteoporosis induction, the rats were divided into five groups: Osteoporosis; EGb1 (28 mg/Kg); EGb2 (56 mg/Kg); alendronate (0.2 mg/animal) and control. The animals were treated during 20 and 30 days. The control group was compared with the osteoporosis’s (Student’s t-test), while the other were analyzed by ANOVA test followed by Tukey/Dunnett’T3 (p<0.05). In the osteoporosis group the bone alkaline phosphatase, bone mineral density, the bone stiffness, the maximum load and the resilience were reduced. The bone alkaline phosphatase values...

Ultrastructural analysis of kidney, liver and duodenum isolated from treated rats with Ginkgo Biloba extract and effects of this medicinal plant on the biodistribution of the padiopharmaceutical sodium pertechnetate BABT
Moreno,Silvana Ramos Farias; Carvalho,Jorge José de; Nascimento,Ana Lúcia; Arnobio,Adriano; Olej,Beni; Timóteo,Margareth de Oliveira; Caldas,Luiz Querino de Araújo; Bernardo Filho,Mário.
Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb) has been used to treat memory and concentration deficits, acts as platelet activating factor antagonism and prevents against damages caused by free radicals. EGb is a standardized extract that contains 24% flavonoids and 6% terpenoids. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possible influence of an EGb on the ultrastructure of some organs isolated from rats and on the biodistribution of sodium pertechnetate (99mTcO4Na). The animals were treated with EGb and after six days, received 99mTcO4Na. The organs were isolated and fixed for ultrastructural analysis. The results showed that EGb has modified the ultrastructure of kidney, liver and duodenum and altered the biodistribution of 99mTcO4Na (P<0.05). It is speculated that the...

Effect of Ginkgo biloba on the reproductive outcome and oxidative stress biomarkers of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats BJMBR
Rudge,M.V.C.; Damasceno,D.C.; Volpato,G.T.; Almeida,F.C.G.; Calderon,I.M.P.; Lemonica,I.P..
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Ginkgo biloba treatment (EGb 761, 200 mg kg-1 day-1) administered from day 0 to 20 of pregnancy on maternal reproductive performance and on the maternal and fetal liver antioxidant systems of streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. On day 21 of pregnancy, the adult rats (weighing approximately 250 ± 50 g, minimum number = 13/group) were anesthetized to obtain maternal and fetal liver samples for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and total glutathione (GSH-t) determinations. The uterus was weighed with its contents. The diabetic (G3) and treated diabetic (G4) groups of rats presented significant maternal hyperglycemia, reduced term pregnancy rate,...

Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (EGb 761) enhances catalepsy induced by haloperidol and L-nitroarginine in mice BJMBR
Fontana,L.; Souza,A.S.; Del Bel,E.A.; Oliveira,R.M.W. de.
Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 has been reported to have therapeutic effects which have been attributed to anti-oxidant and free radical-scavenging activities, including a direct action on nitric oxide production. L G-nitro-arginine (L-NOARG), a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, and haloperidol, a drug that blocks dopamine receptors, are both known to induce catalepsy in rodents. Nitric oxide has been shown to influence dopaminergic transmission in the striatum. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the extract obtained from leaves of Ginkgo biloba tree EGb 761 on catalepsy induced by haloperidol or by L-NOARG. Albino Swiss mice (35-45 g, N = 8-12) received by gavage a single or repeated oral dose (twice a day for 4 days) of EGb 761...

Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) attenuates oxidative stress induction in erythrocytes of sickle cell disease patients BJPS
Furman,Aline Emmer Ferreira; Henneberg,Railson; Hermann,Priscila Bacarin; Leonart,Maria Suely Soares; Nascimento,Aguinaldo José do.
Sickle cell disease promotes hemolytic anemia and occlusion of small blood vessels due to the presence of high concentrations of hemoglobin S, resulting in increased production of reactive oxygen species and decreased antioxidant defense capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective action of a standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761), selected due to its high content of flavonoids and terpenoids, in erythrocytes of patients with sickle cell anemia (HbSS, SS erythrocytes) subjected to oxidative stress using tert-butylhydroperoxide or 2,2-azobis-(amidinepropane)-dihydrochloride, in vitro. Hemolysis indexes, reduced glutathione, methemoglobin concentrations, lipid peroxidation, and intracellular reactive oxygen species were...
