Meiobenthic distribution and nematode community structure in five European estuaries OMA
Soetaert, K.; Vincx, M.; Wittoeck, J.; Tulkens, M..
Meiofauna from the intertidal zone of five European estuaries (Ems, Westerschelde, Somme, Gironde, Tagus) was investigated. Samples represented a cross section of various benthic habitats from near-freshwater to marine, from pure silts to fine-sandy bottoms. The meiobenthic community comprised everywhere a fauna strongly dominated by nematodes, with meiobenthic density increasing with increasing salinity. The Ems differed from the other estuaries due to the presence of a well developed community of Copepods, Gastrotrichs, large Ciliates and/or soft-shelled Foraminiferans in some sites. The Westerschelde stood out due to the near-absence of harpacticoid copepods and, as in the Tagus, the lower meiobenthic densities in the marine part of the estuary. For...

Spring phytoplankton assemblages in and around the maximum turbidity zone of the estuaries of the Elbe (Germany), the Schelde (Belgium/The Netherlands) and the Gironde (France) OMA
Muylaert, K.; Sabbe, K..
In spring 1993 phytoplankton samples were taken along the longitudinal salinity gradient of the estuaries of the Elbe, Schelde and Gironde. A minimum in phytoplankton abundance, biomass and diversity was observed in the inner to upper reaches of all estuaries, suggesting massive mortality in these zones. Due to a combination of high turbidity and high river runoff, phytoplankton of the Gironde estuary differed in species composition and had lower cell abundancies and biomass compared with Elbe and Schelde. Phytoplankton structure and biomass of the polyhaline reaches of the Elbe and Schelde were quite comparable. They were characterized by the diatoms <i>Skeletonema costatum</i> and several <i>Thalassiosira</i> spp. and most...

Uptake of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in turbid, tidal estuaries OMA
Middelburg, J.J.; Nieuwenhuize, J..
Ammonium and nitrate uptake was measured in 6 European tidal estuaries (Ems, Rhine, Scheldt, Loire, Gironde and Douro) using 15N-tracer techniques. Uptake rates of ammonium and nitrate ranged from 0.005 to 1.56 µmol N l-1h-1 and 0.00025 to 0.25 µmol N l-1 h-1, respectively, and differed significantly between and within estuaries. Analysis of nitrogen uptake using the relative preferential index (RPI) indicated ammonium to be the preferred substrate. The turnover times of particulate nitrogen (0.7 to 31 d) and dissolved ammonium (0.1 to 27 d) were similar to or shorter than estuarine-water residence times, whereas turnover times of dissolved...

Comparative study of the hyperbenthos of three European estuaries OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Hamerlynck, O..
The hyperbenthic fauna of the subtidal channels of the Eems (N. Netherlands), Westerschelde (S.W. Netherlands), and Gironde (S.W. France) estuaries was sampled within a 15-day period in summer 1991. In each estuary, quantitative samples were taken at regularly spaced stations covering the entire salinity gradient from marine conditions at the mouth to nearly freshwater conditions upstream. The diversity of the samples and the distribution of the species along the main estuarine gradients were assessed. Hyperbenthic communities were identified using different multivariate statistical techniques. The species composition and the density and biomass of the dominant species of each community were compared among communities.

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i> in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i>in the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. <i>N. integer</i> was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 <i>Eurytemora affinis</i>...
