The rise and fall of the Refugial Hypothesis of Amazonian speciation: a paleoecological perspective Biota Neotropica
Bush,Mark B.; Oliveira,Paulo E. de.
The refugial hypothesis is treated as the definitive history of Amazonian forests in many texts. Surprisingly, this important theoretical framework has not been based on paleoecological data. Consequently, a model of Amazonian aridity during the northern hemispheric glaciation has been accepted uncritically. Ironically, the Refuge Hypothesis has not been tested by paleobotanical data. We present a revision of the concept of Neotropical Pleistocene Forest Refuges and test it in the light of paleocological studies derived from pollen analysis of Amazonian lake sediments deposited during the last 20,000 years. Our analysis is based primarily on paleoenvironmental data obtained from sites in Brazil and Ecuador. These data are contrasted with those that favor...

Impact des oscillations climatiques rapides du dernier cycle glaciaire sur l'érosion et les transferts sédimentaires dans le sud des Alpes (SE France) ArchiMer
Bonneau, Lucile.
While dominant processes and time-scales controlling denudation rates are intensively debated, past terrigenous input remains difficult to detect from the marine sedimentary record, especially during the Quaternary because of the strong overprint exerted by the sea-level changes. In this study, we focus on the Var sediment-routing system (SE France) where the absence of a continental shelf off the Var river mouth (Ligurian margin, NW Mediterranean Sea) resulted in the direct connection between the Var River and the deep basin during both highstand and lowstand conditions. Moreover hyperpycnal flow initiated during Var floods are the main sediment transfer processes in the Var turbidite system, making changes in sediment supply within headwater source...

Reconstruction des transferts sédimentaires en provenance du système glaciaire de Mer d'Irlande et du paléofleuve Manche au cours des derniers cycles climatiques ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel.
The Pleistocene has been period of fluctuating climate accompanied by prominent sea-level lowstands during the glacial intervals, when massive continental ice sheets extended from mountainous to lowland European areas. The retreat of the shoreline on the extensive present-day shallow continental shelf of the southern part of the British Isles induced the appearance of the 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver, one of the largest systems that drained the European continent. Sedimentary records from the Bay of Biscay offer an independent record allowing the reconstruction of the freshwater and sediment discharges of the 'Fleuve Manche', and the possibility of detecting the imprint of surrounding ice-sheet oscillations and attendant modification of hinterland drainage...

Flowing into the unknown: inferred paleodrainages for studying the ichthyofauna of Brazilian coastal rivers Neotropical Ichthyology
Thomaz,Andréa T.; Knowles,L. Lacey.
ABSTRACT The eastern coastal basins of Brazil are a series of small and isolated rivers that drain directly into the Atlantic Ocean. During the Pleistocene, sea-level retreat caused by glaciations exposed the continental shelf, resulting in enlarged paleodrainages that connected rivers that are isolated today. Using Geographic Information System (GIS), we infer the distribution of these paleodrainages, and their properties for the east Brazilian coast. Specifically, using elevation/bathymetric data for the largest sea-level retreats during the Pleistocene, the paleodrainages, their area and the number of contemporary basins connected by each palaeodrainage, was inferred. For the 145 inferred paleodrainages, total paleodrainage area is strongly correlated...
