Pilot Census of marine life in the Gulf of Maine: contributions of technology ArchiMer
Foote, Kg.
Recent advances in physical oceanography, sampling and observation tools, and data management methods are sufficient to enable a wide range of organisms in the Gulf of Maine to be quantified and related both to other organisms and to the physical habitat. A pilot Census of marine life in the Gulf of Maine would advance the goals of ecosystem understanding and management in a timely manner. A prerequisite is knowledge of the distribution and abundance of the organisms that inhabit, both permanently and transiently, the Gulf of Maine and adjacent waters, namely those of Georges Bank, Browns Bank, and Slope Sea, including the New England seamounts. Both systematic and synoptic investigations of a spectrum of marine life are needed to supplement current data...

Time series analysis of interrupted long-term data set (1961-1991) of zooplankton abundance in Gulf of Maine (northern Atlantic, USA) ArchiMer
Licandro, P; Conversi, A; Ibanez, F; Jossi, J.
The main interannual and seasonal signals have been extracted from a multi-decadal data set of zooplankton collected with the Continuous Plankton Recorder in the Gulf of Maine, from January 1961 to December 1991. The monthly abundances of seven species or genera of copepods representing the dominant biomass in the area were considered. The presence of a large consecutive gap (35 months) prevented the use of statistical methods for the prediction of missing data. The eigen-vector filtering (EVF) method was then used on the original time series, while retaining the missing values. For each zooplankton taxon, two principal modes of variability (F-1 and F-2) were extracted, representing the interannual and seasonal variations, respectively. Results of EVF...

The Gulf of Maine biogeographical information system project: developing a spatial data management framework in support of OBIS ArchiMer
Tsontos, Vm; Kiefer, Da.
Central to the development of an inventory of marine life and improved conceptual understanding of the mechanisms that dynamically shape species distribution patterns is the implementation of strategies aimed at enhancing assimilation and access to existing biogeographical information. Using the Internet as a medium, the Gulf of Maine Biogeographic Information System (GMBIS) project provides a framework and a set of reusable tools for the integration, visualization, analysis and dissemination of diverse types of biogeographical and oceanographic information. End-to-end viability of this approach is demonstrated in the context of a series of scientific storylines and a pilot application for the Gulf of Maine (GoM), a well-studied ecosystem that has been...
