Improved drying of high moisture grains AgEcon
McLeod, Ross.
An economic evaluation of three ACIAR projects whose primary objective was to improve postharvest grain drying in Thailand and Australia is provided in this report. During 1983–1996, ACIAR invested A$1.2 million in research designed to improve grain drying in these countries. Based on current adoption, the investment has resulted in a realised net present value of A$3.6 million. A benefit–cost ratio of 3:1 was estimated for the projects. In other words, for each dollar invested, three dollars of project benefits have resulted. A high proportion of realised benefits was estimated to accrue to Australian rice producers, through reduced grain drying costs, while benefits have also been captured by the Thai rice production industry through reduced postharvest...

Meyer and schilz function to estimate common bean seed water content evaluated by radiofrequency Scientia Agricola
Berbert,Pedro Amorim; Molina,Marília Berbert; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Carlesso,Vinícius de Oliveira; Oliveira,Marcia Terezinha Ramos de.
Derivation of density-independent dielectric functions for moisture determination in grains is important for the implementation of on-line sensors in automated driers. The object of this study was to investigate the Meyer and Schilz function [(epsilon'1)/epsilon"] for indirect and non-destructive water content measurement of seeds of common bean by radiofrequency, where epsilon' and epsilon" are the relative permittivity and the dielectric loss factor, respectively. Samples consisted of common bean seeds variety Campeão-3 at moisture contents ranging from 11.5 to 20.6% w.b., and bulk densities from 756 to 854 kg m-3, performing dielectric measurements in a room at 20 ± 1ºC and 66 ± 2% relative humidity. The model could estimate common bean seed moisture...

Germinated paddy (GP) has higher active components and better textural property than brown rice. Germination time and drying temperature are very important parameter to GP quality since the microstructure of starch granules is modified during germination and this might affect the drying characteristics and the dried GP quality. Therefore, the objective of this work was to study the effect of germination time and drying temperature on the changes in the drying kinetics and qualities of GP. Experimental results showed that the extending germination time provided lower hardness of cooked GP and higher GABA content but did not affect the number of fissured kernels and the drying characteristics. The drying temperatures significantly affected the number of...
