IMPACT OF IDENTITY PRESERVATION OF NON-GMO CROPS ON THE GRAIN MARKET SYSTEM AgEcon
Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; Fulton, Joan R.; Dooley, Frank J.; Preckel, Paul V..
The impact of identity preservation (IP) for genetically modified grains (GMOs) on the grain handling system for a typical region in the Eastern Corn Belt is examined. A cost minimizing linear programming model of the transshipment system from farms to grain elevators to grain users tracks shipments and costs through the marketing system. This study compares two different grain segregation strategies: segregating grain within the elevator and designating specific elevators as IP-only facilities. As the cost per unit for grain segregation increases, the designated plant strategy becomes the most cost efficient strategy.

Marketing and Transportation of Grain by Local Cooperatives AgEcon
Yager, Francis P.; Hunley, Charles L..
A total of 2,339 local cooperative associations handled 4.6 billion bushels of grain during the 1979-80 marketing year. This amounts to around 40 percent of total off-farm grain sales. Their grain storage capacity totaled 2.3 billion bushels. Corn, at 1 .8 billion bushels, ranked as the leading grain handled; wheat second at 1.1 billion bushels. More than half the grain sold by local cooperatives moved by truck.

CANADIAN TRANSPORTATION AND GRAIN HANDLING: ISSUES AFFECTING THE NORTH AMERICAN BARLEY SECTOR AgEcon
Park, Joon J.; Wilson, William W.; Johnson, D. Demcey.
The Canadian grain handling and transportation system has undergone substantial change in recent years, particularly since the elimination of rail subsidies in 1995. Competitive pressures and branch line abandonment have forced many primary elevators to close, while scores of new high-throughput elevators have been constructed across the Prairies. Rationalization of the grain handling system and proposals for further deregulation of rail transportation are driven by the need to improve system efficiency. Policy recommendations of the Estey Report (notably, the elimination of rail rate caps, and 'port buying' by the Canadian Wheat Board) would have important consequences for the grain trade and are contentious issues within Canada. Changes in grain...

Marketing and Transportation of Grain By Local Cooperatives AgEcon
Hunley, Charles L..
A total of 2,060 local cooperative associations handled 4.7 billion bushels of grain during the 1982-83 marketing year. This is about 41 percent of all grain sold off-farm during the year. Cooperative grain storage capacity totaled 2.5 billion bushels. Corn, at 1 .5 billion bushels, ranked as the leading grain marketed; wheat was second at slightly under 1.0 billion. More than half of the grain sold by local cooperatives moved by truck.

PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION AND SEGREGATION IN AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS: NON-GENETICALLY MODIFIED AND SPECIALTY CORN AND SOYBEAN CROPS IN IOWA AgEcon
Miranowski, John A.; Jensen, Helen H.; Batres-Marquez, S. Patricia; Ishdorj, Ariun.
An important dimension of product differentiation and segregation for specialty crops is the added handling and transaction costs incurred. Some forms of business organization may realize lower costs of providing such services, and if specialty crop production is growing relative to commodity production, these two factors may have implications for industry structure. We use data from an Iowa grain handling survey to test hypotheses developed in the non-empirical transaction-costs literature with respect to organizational and financial governance of cooperatives and private and corporate firms. Preliminary results are discussed with respect to business organizations, added costs, investments, crops, and contracting.

THE PROVISION OF RAIL SERVICE: THE IMPACT OF COMPETITION AgEcon
Fulton, Murray E.; Gray, Richard S..
Grain transportation is one of the most important economic issues for grain producers in the Northern Plains. The reliance on export markets and the long distances to port position means that transportation costs have a significant effect on the price received by farmers. In the prairie region of Canada, rail transportation is undergoing a major transformation that will affect the competitive positions of agriculture in both the United States and Canada and influence the direction of grain flows between the two countries. Rail rates are no longer legislated although a cap is still in place), restrictions on branch line abandonment have been lifted, and further deregulation of price and car allocation is being considered. Some parties, including the...
