PHYSIC-CHEMICAL QUALITY OF SECOND CROP CORN AS A FUNCTION OF TIME BETWEEN HARVEST AND DRYING REA
Andrade,José C. de; Goneli,André L. D.; Hartmann Filho,Cesar P.; Goes,Rafael H. de T. E B. de; Gonçalves,Alexandre A..
ABSTRACT: The gap in the storage industry has brought a series of problems for the agro industrial market today, as its ability to directly infer the quality of newly collected material. The present study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the quality of second crop corn harvested with different water contents depending on the period until drying. The corn grains were harvested with moisture contents of approximately 28.5; 22.4; 21 and 19%, and subjected to temporary storage for ten days, simulating the time between harvest and drying. In the period, every two days the quality was evaluated by determining the specific mass, electrical conductivity, color, crude protein content, ethereal extract, ashes and carbohydrates. Based on the obtained...

Agronomic traits and chemical composition of single hybrids of sweet corn Horticultura Brasileira
Kwiatkowski,Angela; Clemente,Edmar; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
In Brazil, the greengrocery market of sweet corn has been expanding along the country. In contrast, there have been few agri-industries canning sweet corn (Zea mays) because of the lack of cultivars with agronomic characteristics proper to industrial purposes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of seven inbred lines of sweet corn, and the specific combining ability (SCA) of their hybrid combinations based on their agronomic traits, and the chemical composition of the grain. In the growing season 2006/2007, twenty-one single hybrids were evaluated in the Iguatemi Research Station, Maringá County, Northwestern Paraná, in Brazil using a complete randomized block design with four replications. Data were subjected to...

Methods for assessment of pre-harvest sprouting in wheat cultivars PAB
Gavazza,Melícia Ingredi Araújo; Bassoi,Manoel Carlos; Carvalho,Tereza Cristina de; Bespalhok Filho,João Carlos; Panobianco,Maristela.
The objective of this work was to test methods for pre-harvest sprouting assessment in wheat cultivars. Fourteen wheat cultivars were grown in Londrina and Ponta Grossa municipalities, Paraná state, Brazil. They were sampled at 10 and 17 days after physiological maturity and evaluated using the methods of germination by rainfall simulation (in a greenhouse), in-ear grain sprouting, and grains removed from the ears. The in-ear grain sprouting method allowed the differentiation of cultivars, but showed different resistance levels from the available description of cultivars. The sprouting of grain removed from the ears did not allow a reliable distinction of data on germination in any harvest date or location. The method of rainfall simulation is the most...

Nitrogen management alternatives using Azospirillum brasilense in wheat PAB
Munareto,Janete Denardi; Martin,Thomas Newton; Fipke,Glauber Monçon; Cunha,Vinícius dos Santos; Rosa,Guilherme Bergeijer da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate nitrogen management alternatives using Azospirillum brasilense inoculation in wheat (Triticum aestivum) by seed and foliar applications. Treatments consisted of the inoculation or not of A. brasilense, via seed and leaves, associated with topdressing with 0, 70, and 140 kg ha-1 nitrogen. Three wheat cultivars were tested: BRS Parrudo, TBIO Quartzo, and TBIO Sinuelo. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, with three replicates. The following traits were evaluated: number of emerged plants, tillers, spikelets per ear, grains per ear, and grains per spikelet; 1,000-grain mass; hectoliter mass; and grain yield. The foliar management of A. brasilense showed a better association with the TBIO...

Genome-wide association for mapping QTLs linked to protein and oil contents in soybean PAB
Dias,Douglas Antônio; Polo,Leandra Regina Texeira; Lazzari,Fabiane; Silva,Glacy Jaqueline da; Schuster,Ivan.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers linked with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with increased contents of protein and oil in soybean. A total of 169 Brazilian soybean varieties, genotyped with 6,000 SNP markers, were evaluated. Protein and oil contents were obtained with the near-infrared reflectance method. Correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify linkage disequilibrium between SNP markers and the QTLs associated with the two characteristics. Seven QTLs were found to be associated with protein content, on six chromosomes (2, 6, 11, 12, 13, and 16), explaining 60.9% of the variation in this trait. For oil content, eight QTLs were identified on six...

Economics of grain accumulation for ethanol production: a regional case study AgEcon
Anderton, N.; Kingwell, Ross S..
Ethanol production is increasingly commonplace in many grain producing regions. This paper uses the grain producing region of Western Australia as a case study to illustrate how the location and size of an ethanol plant affects its grain accumulation costs. Specifically, this study examines how price variability of various wheat grades, combined with spatial and temporal variability in production of those grades affects the costs of grain accumulation for ethanol production. These costs are the main component of a plant's operating costs so lessening these costs can offer a comparative advantage for a plant owner. Logistics models' based on mathematical programming were constructed to depict a range of plant sizes and locations for ethanol production. The...

EFFECT OF PROPOSED GRAIN STANDARDS ON MARKETING COSTS OF THE U.S. SORGHUM SECTOR: AN INTERREGIONAL TRANSSHIPMENT-PLANT LOCATION MODEL AgEcon
Ziari, Houshmand A.; Fuller, Stephen W.; Grant, Warren R.; Sutaria, Vinod.
Recent legislative initiatives call for studies to evaluate costs associated with cleaning U.S. grains to meet more stringent standards. This paper reports on a study which developed a mixed-integer programming model of the U.S. sorghum sector to (1) determine the least-cost geographic location for new cleaning investment at the country, terminal and port elevator stages of the marketing system and (2) measure additional system marketing costs associated with implementing the proposed standards. Results show the least-cost cleaning location to be at country and terminal elevators in excess supply regions. Implementing the proposed standard would increase system costs about 2 percent.

Wheat Cleaning and its Effect on U.S. Wheat Exports AgEcon
Haley, Stephen L.; Leetmaa, Susan E.; Webb, Alan J..
This analysis shows that there could be net gains to the U.S. wheat industry if all U.S. export wheat were to be cleaned to a dockage level between 0.35 to 0.40 percent. These results are based on survey results of major importers of U.S. wheat, and a model of world wheat trade. Larger benefits to the U.S. wheat industry would be possible from cleaning only wheat destined to countries that demand higher quality U.S. wheat. However, these gains in export revenue from selling cleaner wheat could be offset if other exporters, especially Canada, responded in ways that would maintain their market share.

GRAIN QUALITY AND NORTH AMERICAN HARD WHEAT EXPORTS AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L..
Past debate on competition and quality in international wheat markets has focused on class and country of origin as the salient source of differentiation. This study analyzes changes in demand for both wheat classes and grades. Comparisons are made between Canadian and U.S. hard wheats, principal competitors in the hard wheat market. Both countries are dominant producers of Hard Red Spring Wheat (HRS in the United States and Canadian Western Red Spring [CWRS] in Canada); the United States is the dominant producer of Hard Red Winter (HRW); and both countries are large producers of durum (Hard Amber Durum [HAD] in the United States and Canadian Western Amber Durum [CWAD] in Canada). Due to the indigenous similarities among these wheats, the competitive...

IMPACTS OF DON IN THE MALTING BARLEY SUPPLY CHAIN: AGGREGATE COSTS AND FIRM-LEVEL RISKS AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Nganje, William E..
DON is a toxic byproduct of fusarium head blight (FHB), a fungal disease of small grains. Beginning in 1993, a prolonged outbreak of FHB occurred in the Upper Midwest, the traditional source of most six-rowed malting barley produced in the United States. Price discounts associated with DON in barley have been significant. This paper has two objectives. The first is to estimate the impact of DON on the value of malting barley grown in the Upper Midwest. Using crop quality data, we use a linear programming model to derive optimal blends of barley supplies, given discount schedules and the distribution of quality factors. The premise is that blending activities, on a regional scale, allow a larger fraction of the crop to be sold as malting. The second...

WHEAT QUALITY AND WHEAT YIELDS: TRADE-OFFS AMONG PRICE, YIELD, PROFIT, AND RISK AgEcon
Smith, Vincent H..
In this report, important wheat quality attributes and their links to varietal differences are identified, and their technical and economic importance to the milling and baking industries is examined. Wheat class and grading systems used in the United States and other countries are described, and the relationships between wheat classes and wheat varieties and between physical and wholesomeness attributes and grades are identified. The per bushel prices received by farmers' for their wheat depend on the classes and grades of wheat they produce. However, wheat classes and, to some degree, grades are linked to varietal choices and those choices also affect average per acre yields and year-to-year yield variability. Therefore, this report also examines the...
