Antimicrobial susceptibility of quinupristin/dalfopristin tested against gram-positive cocci from Latin America: results from the Global SMART (GSMART) surveillance study BJID
Sader,Helio S.; Jones,Ronald N.; Ballow,Charles H.; Biedenbach,Douglas J.; Cereda,Rosangela F..
Gram-positive cocci are important causes of both nosocomial and community-acquired infections, and antimicrobial resistance among these pathogens has become an important problem worldwide. Since resistance among these organisms can vary substantially by geographic location, we conducted a multicenter surveillance study with isolates from five Latin American countries (15 medical centers). Quinupristin/dalfopristin (formerly RP-59500) is a novel streptogramin combination with focused activity against Gram-positive cocci, many exhibiting emerging resistance. The in vitro activity of quinupristin/dalfopristin and 12 other antimicrobial agents were evaluated against 1,948 strains including Staphylococcus aureus (747 strains), coagulase-negative staphylococci...

Evaluation of the automated system Vitek2 for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Brazilian Gram-positive cocci strains BJID
d'Azevedo,Pedro Alves; Siquiera,Itacy; Gugel,Juliana; Antunes,Ana Lúcia Souza; Secchi,Carina; Pasternak,Jacyr; Martino,Marinês Dalla Vale.
Automated instruments offer many advantages for clinical laboratories. Nevertheless, they can have problems identifying and determining susceptibilities of some pathogens. Vitek® 2 (bioMérieux) is an automated system that was recently introduced to Brazil. We evaluated the performance of this equipment for Brazilian isolates that had been characterized using reference identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods. Ninety-nine strains of Gram-positive cocci from a local reference center collection were analyzed, consisting of 50 coagulasenegative Staphylococcus (CoNS) and 49 Enterococcus and related species. Vitek® 2 correctly identified 79.8% (79/99) of the isolates. Oxacillin resistance was detected in 76% (19/25) of resistant S....

In Vitro susceptibility of Gram-positive cocci isolated from skin and respiratory tract to azithromycin and twelve other antimicrobial agents BJID
Mendes,Caio M. F.; Sinto,Sumiko I.; Oplustil,Carmen Paz.
This study was conducted to evaluate the activity of azithromycin in comparison to 12 other antibacterial agents against recent isolates obtained consecutively from patients with respiratory tract or skin infections, from January to July, 2000. A total of 717 Gram-positive cocci were analyzed in this study and the following species were studied: Staphylococcus aureus (n=576), beta-hemolytic streptococci ( n=115), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n=26). Susceptibility testing was carried out by the disk diffusion method and interpreted according to NCCLS breakpoints. The activity of azithromycin was compared to erythromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, oxacillin, penicillin, ceftriaxone, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole,...

Antimicrobial activity of linezolid against Gram-positive cocci isolated in Brazil BJID
Sader,Helio S.; Gales,Ana C.; Jones,Ronald N..
The new oxazolidinone linezolid and other antimicrobial agents used to treat Gram-positive infections were tested against 1,585 Gram-positive cocci; 1,260 staphylococci and enterococci isolates from patients hospitalized in Brazilian hospitals, and 325 S. pneumoniae isolates for patients with community acquired infections. Susceptibility testing was performed using broth microdilution according to NCCLS procedures. Linezolid was the most active compound and the only drug that inhibited 100% of the isolates at the susceptible breakpoint (< 4 mg/mL). Resistance to vancomycin was very rare (99.9% susceptibility), and both quinupristin/dalfopristin and gatifloxacin were active against approximately 90% of the strains evaluated. All other compounds inhibited...
