Six populations of Sinipta dalmani from the provinces of Buenos Aires and Entre Rios (Argentina) were analyzed. The populations of "El Palmar" National Park (Entre Rios) were polymorphic for pericentric inversions in pairs M4 and M7 and for a centric fusion involving pair M5 and the X chromosome. The M4 inversion remained similar over time and the karyomorphic frequencies did not depart from those expected according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The analysis of chiasma frequency and distribution showed clear intra- and interchromosome effects of the different chromosome rearrangements. Both inversions and centric fusions were related with total or partial crossing over restriction in heterozygous condition, leading to a genetic differentiation between... |

Dichroplus maculipennis (Blanchard) and D. elongatus Giglio-Tos are two of the most important melanoplines in Argentina, both ecologically and economically. The postembryonic development and forage loss (consumption of Bromus brevis Ness + fallen material) caused by older nymphs (instars IV, V, VI) and adults of both species were studied under controlled conditions (30ºC, 14L:10D, 40% RH). Five nymphal instars were recorded in D. elongatus, and six in D. maculipennis. Total nymphal development was similar in both species (D. elongatus: 32 ± 0.70 days; D. maculipennis: 34.5 ± 0.37 days). Daily consumption increased from nymphal instars to pre-reproductive adult stage. In both species, pre-reproductive females had higher consumption rates than other stages... |

Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) has Eichhornia crassipes, E. azurea, Pontederia cordata and P. lanceolata (Pontederiaceae) as the known host plants. This grasshopper species is cited as a possible agent of biological control for native aquatic macrophytes E. azurea and E. crassipes. This study, carried out from March, 2006 to February, 2007, aimed to evaluate the phenology and age structure of the population of C. aquaticum associated with E. azurea in Piuval bay, Pantanal of Poconé, MT, and to identify possible relationships of its life cycle to abiotic factors such as insolation, temperature and precipitation. Monthly collections of 50 individuals were carried out according to the protocol defined by the "Host - Insect Coevolution on Waterhyacinth" project.... |

The acoustic behavior of Fenestra bohlsii Giglio-Tos is described for the first time. The sounds and behaviors were observed and registered in captivity. The signals were digitized with the Sound-Blaster AWE64 Gold program and analysed with the Avisoft SAS Lab Pro 30 PC for MS Windows software. Seven different types of sounds are described as produced by males: spontaneous song (also used during the courtship), two different types of courtship song, assault song, tapping associated to the courtship, interaction between males and fly crackling. For each one, the characteristic oscillograms and frequency spectra are given. Sounds are produced by different mechanisms: femoro-tegminal stridulation, typical for Gomphocerinae, fly crackling, hind tarsi tapping... |

The fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum, strain CG 423, was tested under field conditions against the gregarious grasshopper Rhammatocerus schistocercoides (Rehn) (Orthoptera: Acrididae). Conidia formulated in a racemic mixture of soybean oil and kerosene were sprayed under field conditions using an ultralow-volume hand-held atomizer Ulva Plus adjusted to deliver 2.9 L/ha. Bands composed of 2nd instar nymphs were treated with either 5.0x10(12) or 1.0x10(13) viable conidia/ha. The number of insects in each band was estimated at day one following spraying and by the end of the field trial (15 to 16 days post-treatment). Reductions in population size reached, in average, 65.8% and 80.4% for bands treated with the higher and lower dosage, respectively.... |

Females of Orphulella punctata (de Geer, 1794) were captured in the field and kept in cages with food and boxes filled with moist soil for oviposition. The eggs, macerated with 0,85% saline solution and centrifugated, were used as the immunizing antigen for obtention of the specific antiserum (AS-O). Rabbits were immunized by the linphonodule injection method with two injections of this antigen, with an interval of 15 days between the 1st and 2nd inoculations. Serological tests were performed using double diffusion in agar gel with homologous and heterologous antigens. Specific serological reactions were obtained 14 days after the 1st inoculation. The antiserum of the 30th day gave 5, 2-4 and 1-4 precipitation lines respectively with eggs, female and male... |
