Social-ecological resilience (SER) expresses the capacity of a social-ecological system to adapt and transform. We investigated the ways in which different types and transformations of social capital influence the SER of a region. The study area, the Asteroussia Mountains in southern Crete, Greece, is a typical semiarid hilly/mountainous area of the eastern Mediterranean in which land degradation is one of the most important issues in land management, mostly related to overgrazing because of the growing size of the flocks of sheep and goats. The approach followed was qualitative, with in-depth interviews with a small number of key stakeholders in the area. The findings indicate many important changes in the area in terms of its production, economy, and... |

The MAST II WAVEMOD Project aimed at improving stochastic modelling of ocean waves and currents in coastal waters. In order to supplement existing data, two measurement campaigns were carried our, one on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, and, secondly, on the northern coast of Crete in the Mediterranean. The Portuguese measurements covered 7 months during winter 1993-1994, while off Crete, measurements started early in February 1994 and continued for 10 months, In both sites, two directional Waveriders and one non-directional Waverider were deployed along a transect our from the coast in water depths between 10 and 100 m. In addition, the Mediterranean site also incorporated measurements of mean current velocities. Available satellite data were analysed to... |

As part of a global investigation of foraminifera importance in the Mediterranean paralic realm, the distribution of present foraminifera in Kalloni Bay was studied through species determination and counting. From these basic data, density, species richness, Shannon Index and dominance were calculated for several stations covering the whole basin. In addition, a factorial analysis of correspondances between stations and species assemblages was performed. All these methods concur in showing that the organization of foraminifera populations follows sc principal longitudinal gradient from the entrance towards the most continental reaches and a subsidiary transverse gradient. When compared with sedimentological data, the distribution of foraminifera does not... |

Several forms of Albinaria idaea (L. Pfeiffer, 1849) have been described as (sub)species from various sites on Mt. Ida (Central Crete). In recent years, however, much additional material has been collected, which made clear that no sharp boundaries exist between these forms. Moreover, several characters proved to be altitude dependent to a certain extent. It may be concluded that on Mt. Ida only a single evolutionary entity can be distinguished, viz. A. i. idaea. On the isolated Mt. Kedros, south-west of Mt. Ida, an undescribed allopatric form was found, which because of its smaller size and differences in altitude dependent characters was given subspecific rank as A. i. amabilis ssp. nov. On the Paximadia Isles, south of Central Crete, a percostate and a... |

We investigated mtDNA genetic differentiation and the phylogenetic relationships of 11 populations of the oniscidean genus Ligidium. We studied nine populations from Greece, assigned to three nominal species (L. euboicum, L. germanicum and L. beieri), and two from central Europe (L. germanicum and L. hypnorum), applying RFLP analysis of two mtDNA segments (12S rDNA and 16S rDNA) amplified by PCR. The analysis revealed seven monomorphic and four polymorphic populations, and 17 different haplotypes, each one present in one population only. Several restriction enzymes produced population specific patterns, enabling discrimination among the different populations. The estimated net nucleotide divergence between populations ranges from 1.06 to 16.52%, while the... |

A new troglobitic genus and species, viz. Speleodentorcula beroni gen. & spec. nov., is described from the island of Euboea, Greece. The species, known from a single cave only, is quite isolated systematically. According to the structure of its shell and the genitalia S. beroni should be classified with the Orculidae. Within this family Speleodentorcula is most similar to Walklea anatomically; conchologically there is some vague resemblance to Fauxulus (apertural denticles) and Odontocyclas, Walklea, Fauxulus and Afriboysidia (surface sculpture). Speleodentorcula alone is considered the sister group of the taxon encompassing these last mentioned four genera. |

An annotated check-list concerning the molluscan fauna of the two highest peaks in the Parnon Oros, Peloponnisos, Greece, is provided, with emphasis on distributional data. The localities reported upon are situated only 15 km apart. Nevertheless, they are quite different in species composition. From one of these isolated peaks and from a second locality in another mountain range, Idyla pelobsoleta spec, nov., is described. The insular character of the two Parnon peaks, especially with regard to their clausiliid species, is emphasized. |
