Choice of Index Determines the Relationship between Corruption and Environmental Sustainability Ecology and Society
Ewers, Robert M; Institute of Zoology; robert.ewers@ioz.ac.uk; Smith, Robert J; Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology; r.j.smith@kent.ac.uk.
The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) was recently used to investigate links between sustainability and corruption. Here, we show that the ESI contradicts another widely used index of environmental sustainability, the Ecological Footprint (EF), with the result that the most sustainable nations under the ESI are the least sustainable under the EF. Consequently, opposite conclusions can be drawn from investigations into the causes of environmental sustainability, depending on which index is used.

The U.S. Agricultural Sector and the Macroeconomy AgEcon
Baek, Jungho; Koo, Won W..
The effects of the exchange rate, the U.S. agricultural price, the domestic income, and the interest rate on the U.S. net farm income are investigated in a cointegration framework. For this purpose, the Phillips-Hansen fully-modified cointegration (FM-OLS) procedure is applied to annual data for the period 1957–2008. Results suggest that there exists the long-run equilibrium relationship between the U.S. net farm income and the selected macroeconomic variables. We also find that the exchange rate and U.S. agricultural price are more important than other variables in determining the U.S. net farm income.

The Food and Fiber System: Contributing to the U.S. and World Economies AgEcon
Lipton, Kathryn L..
Even though farming accounts for only about 1 percent of the total national workforce, it is at the core of the food and fiber system. The system is one of the largest sectors in the U.S. economy, and is comprised of industries related to farming, including feed, seed, fertilizer, machinery, food processing, manufacturing, and exporting. The interrelationships among the sectors of the food and fiber system and the U.S. and world economies are many and complex. As a result, U.S. and world policies and economic factors--such as interest and inflation rates--play a critical role in everything from the cost and availability of farm credit to the demand for farm products at home and abroad. The farm crisis of the 1980's illustrates how specific economic events...

Un sistema de indicadores líderes del nivel de actividad para la economía peruana AgEcon
Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Torres, Javier.

Agribusiness participation in the economic structure of a Brazilian region: analysis of GDP and indirect taxes Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Kureski,Ricardo; Moreira,Vilmar Rodrigues; Veiga,Claudimar Pereira da.
Abstract: Agribusiness, including all its dimensions, is the largest economic sector in Brazil and plays a fundamental role in the development of the country's economy. About one-fourth of the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is composed of agribusiness. The objective of this article is to evaluate the participation of agribusiness in the economy of an important region of Brazil from 2010 to 2015. The evaluation was carried out through the decomposition of GDP, with an analysis of aggregate inputs, agro-livestock products, industrialization, and services. This article presents three main contributions to the understanding and composition of agribusiness GDP. The novelty of this article lies in the fact that it is the first work in the literature to...

Brazilian scientific funding agency budgets have not matched the country's economic growth BJMBR
Helene,A.F.; Ribeiro,P.L..
The growth of the Brazilian economy in recent years has created an atmosphere of optimism in various segments of Brazilian society, with several important international repercussions. In this paper, we analyze in detail how this economic growth is reflected in investments in science and technology made by major academic funding agencies. As a result, we observed a discrepancy in the growth of funding input and the growth of the Brazilian gross domestic product. This fact associated with an increased academic output entails negative consequences for the system. This may be a symptom of an academic community not fully understood by society and vice versa. Finally, we believe that a long-lasting important change in investment policy in science is necessary in...
