Mapping the Intertidal Microphytobenthos Gross Primary Production, Part II: Merging Remote Sensing and Physical-Biological Coupled Modeling ArchiMer

Microphytobenthos (MPB) at the sediment surface of intertidal mudflats are known to show a high spatial and temporal variability in response to the biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing at the mud surface. It makes long-term and large-scale monitoring of MPB Gross Primary Production (GPP) difficult to set up. In this study, we developed the first 3D physical-biological coupled model (MARS-3D) that explicitly simulates GPP of intertidal MPB at the mudflat scale, and we compared the outputs with in situ and space remote sensing MPB GPP data. We discuss the sources of discrepancies between the modeling and the remote sensing approach in the light of future developments to be done. For instance, the remote sensing algorithm provides a very synoptic view of...

Oligotrophication and Metabolic Slowing-Down of a NW Mediterranean Coastal Ecosystem ArchiMer
Agusti, Susana; Martinez-ayala, Juan; Regaudie-de-gioux, Aurore; Duarte, Carlos M..
Increased oligotrophication is expected for oligotrophic areas as a consequence of ocean warming, which reduces diffusive vertical nutrient supply due to strengthened stratification. Evidence of ocean oligotrophication has been, thus far, reported for the open ocean. Here we reported oligotrophication and associated changes in plankton community metabolism with warming in a pristine, oligotrophic Mediterranean coastal area (Cap Salines, Mallorca Island, Spain) during a 10 years time series. As a temperate area, there were seasonal patterns associated to changes in the broad temperature range (12.0.28.4.C), with a primary phytoplankton bloom in late winter and a secondary one in the fall. Community respiration (R) rates peaked during summers and showed...

Mapping the Intertidal Microphytobenthos Gross Primary Production Part I: Coupling Multispectral Remote Sensing and Physical Modeling ArchiMer
Méléder, Vona; Savelli, Raphael; Barnett, Alexandre; Polsenaere, Pierre; Gernez, Pierre; Cugier, Philippe; Lerouxel, Astrid; Le Bris, Anthony; Dupuy, Christine; Le Fouest, Vincent; Lavaud, Johann.
The gross primary production (GPP) of intertidal mudflat microphytobenthos supports important ecosystem services such as shoreline stabilization and food production, and it contributes to blue carbon. However, monitoring microphytobenthos GPP over a long-term and large spatial scale is rendered difficult by its high temporal and spatial variability. To overcome this issue, we developed an algorithm to map microphytobenthos GPP in which the following are coupled: (i) NDVI maps derived from high spatial resolution satellite images (SPOT6 or Pléiades), estimating the horizontal distribution of the microphytobenthos biomass; (ii) emersion time, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and mud surface temperature simulated from the physical model MARS-3D;...

Plankton metabolism and dissolved organic carbon use in the Bay of Palma, NW Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Navarro, N; Agusti, S; Duarte, Cm.
A study was conducted to assess the annual variability in planktonic metabolism and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) utilization in an oligotrophic Mediterranean Bay (Bay of Palma, Spain) and to test the role of elevated DOC concentrations in driving planktonic metabolism off balance. We examined, at monthly intervals over 17 mo, gross primary production (GPP), community respiration (R), net community production (NCP), DOC concentration, total chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration, and, for a smaller subset of 11 to 14 mo, net DOC fluxes, bacterial abundance (BA) and bacterial respiration (BR). The community was net heterotrophic in autumn, winter and the first summer studied, and shifted to net autotrophic towards the end of the study period. This period of...

Can we estimate forest gross primary production from leaf lifespan? A test in a young Fagus crenata forest OAK
Koyama, Kohei; Kikuzawa, Kihachiro.
It has been well established that leaf longevity is linked to the carbon economy of plants. We used this relationship to predict leaf lifetime carbon gains from leaf lifespan, and estimated the gross primary production (GPP) of a young deciduous forest of Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) located in central Japan. The light-saturated photosynthetic rates of the leaves were measured repeatedly during the growing season. We used the leaf lifespan to calculate the conversion coefficient from the light-saturated photosynthetic rate into the realized leaf lifetime carbon gain under field conditions. The leaf turnover rate was estimated using litter traps. GPP was estimated as the product of lifetime carbon gain per unit of leaf mass, and the annual leaf turnover...
