Initiatives For Rural Development Through Collective Action : The Case of Household Participation in Group Activities in the Highlands of Central Kenya AgEcon
Kariuki, Gatarwa; Place, Frank.
Dimensions of the nature, scope, and complexity of collective action in Kenya have evolved over many years. In studying collective action, the aim is to understand why and how people participate in networks of trust. The purpose of this study was to investigate the different objectives that farmers pursue through collective action with the aim of understanding the patterns of people’s participation in collective action, identify factors that influence people to join groups, and identify the costs and benefits of participating in activities of groups. The study was carried out in four sites spread across the highlands of central Kenya. Data was collected from a total of 442 households, focusing on whether members of those households belonged to groups and...

Speaking Stata: Problems with tables, Part II AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Three user-written commands are reviewed as illustrations of different approaches to tabulation problems, each one step beyond what is possible to do directly through official Stata. tabcount is a wrapper for tabdisp written to produce tables that show how often specified values occur or specified conditions are satisfied so that, in particular, tables may include explicit zeros whenever desired. makematrix is designed for situations in which a table of results may be compiled by populating a matrix. matrix list or list may then be used to display the table. groups shows frequencies of combinations of values using list. Users should find these commands to be helpful additions to the toolkit. Programmers may be interested in examples of the wrapper...

Shocks, Groups, and Networks in Bukidnon, Philippines AgEcon
Quisumbing, Agnes R.; McNiven, Scott; Godquin, Marie.
This study examines the role of groups and networks in helping poor Filipinos manage their exposure to risks and cope with shocks. It brings together two strands of literature that examine how social capital affects economic variables and investigate the processes by which social capital formation, participation in networks and groups, and trusting behavior comes about. Using a longitudinal study from a province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, the authors find that households belong to a number of formal and informal groups and networks, but participation differs according to household characteristics. Households belonging to the lower asset quartiles belong to fewer groups, and households with more human and physical capital have larger social...

Networks with Group Counterproposals AgEcon
Nieva, Ricardo.
We study two n-player sequential network formation games with externalities. Link formation is tied to simultaneous transfer selection in a Nash demand like game in each period. Players in groups can counterpropose. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for efficiency in terms of cyclical monotonicity. The n-player group version always yields efficiency.

Groups, Networks, and Social Capital in the Philippine Communities AgEcon
Godquin, Marie; Quisumbing, Agnes R..
This paper explores the determinants of group membership and social networks of rural households using a unique longitudinal data set from the rural Philippines. We investigate two types of social capital: membership in groups (production, credit, burial, religious and civic groups), or “formal” social capital, and size of trust-based networks or “informal” social capital. Because men and women may have different propensities to invest in social capital, we analyze the determinants of group membership both at the household level and for men and women separately. We also disaggregate the analysis by type of group. The paper examines the determinants of the density of social capital, proxied by the number of groups and the number of network members. Finally,...
