O açaí-solteiro (Euterpe precatoria Mart.) |

Fucoidans -- sulphated polysaccharides extracted from brown algae - could be beneficial in patients with ischemic diseases. Their antithrombotic and proangiogenic properties promote in animals, neovascularization and angiogenesis which prevent necrosis of ischemic tissue. In 1997, endothelial progenitor cells were first identified in human peripheral blood. They are recruited from bone marrow and contribute to neovascularization after ischemic injury. Mobilization of these cells in ischemic sites is an important step in new vessel formation. It is thought that the progenitors interact with endothelial cells, then extravasate and reach ischemic sites, where they proliferate and differentiate into new blood vessels. Although chemokines, cytokines and... |

EGF family growth factors consists of growth factors, such as transforming growth factor (TGF)-a, heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), amphiregulin (AR) and epiregulin, autocrine growth factors in normal human keratinocytes. HB-EGF is mitogen for epithelial cells and like other members of the EGF family, HB-EGF exerts its biological effects via interaction with the EGF receptor (EGFR). HB-EGF is an autocrine growth factor for human keratinocytes, and has a possible role as a paracrine growth factor for fibroblast. Our report concerning immunohistochemical localization of HB-EGF in normal skin by using the streptavidin-peroxidase (HRP) conjugate method, confirms previous data, revealing specific patterns of HB-EGF localization. Identification of... |

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are ubiquitously found at the cell surface and extracellular matrix in all the animal species. This review will focus on the structural characteristics of the heparan sulfate proteoglycans related to protein interactions leading to cell signaling. The heparan sulfate chains due to their vast structural diversity are able to bind and interact with a wide variety of proteins, such as growth factors, chemokines, morphogens, extracellular matrix components, enzymes, among others. There is a specificity directing the interactions of heparan sulfates and target proteins, regarding both the fine structure of the polysaccharide chain as well precise protein motifs. Heparan sulfates play a role in cellular signaling either as receptor... |

Biossays were performed to assess the effects of different levels of growth medium supplementation with fetal bovine serum (FBS), fish fry extract (FE), combinations of FBS and FE, and addition of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) on the proliferation of brown bullhead catfish cells (BB line). Treatments (n = 4) were: 2.5, 5, 10, and 15.0% FBS or FE and 5/2.5, 5/5, 10/2.5, and 10/5 of a FBS/FE combination as supplement to the growth medium, or the addition of 0.1, 1, 2.5, 10, 25, and 75 ng/ml of either IGF-I or FGF to the growth media. Initial cell density was 1.1 x 10(6) cells per well on uncoated 24-well plates. Incubation temperature was 29.5 ± 0.7ºC. Six hours after plating, initial culture medium was removed,... |

Recent evidence suggests that aerobic physical training may attenuate the deleterious effects of cancer risk factors, including smoking. We investigated the effects of cigarette smoke inhalation and aerobic physical training on the expression of steroid receptors and inflammatory and apoptotic proteins in the prostate. Forty male Wistar rats were distributed in four groups: control (CO), exercise (EXE), cigarette smoke exposure (CS), and cigarette smoke exposure with exercise (CS+EXE). For eight weeks, animals were repeatedly exposed to cigarette smoke for 30 min or performed aerobic physical training either with or without the cigarette smoke inhalation protocol. Following these experiments, we analyzed prostate epithelial morphology and prostatic... |
