Temporal changes in biological traits of diatom communities in response to an oil spill in a subtropical river Anais da ABC (AABC)
FARIA,DENISE M. DE; COSTIN,JÚLIO C.; TREMARIN,PRISCILA I.; LUDWIG,THELMA A.V..
Abstract: Diatom growth strategies, which are used as a proxy to analyze disturbances and environmental impacts, can also provide reliable information about environmental gradients. In this study, we used diatom communities and biological traits to assess the structure of epilithic diatoms after an oil spill in a large tributary of the Iguaçu River (Paraná, Brazil). Epilithon and water samples were taken on July 12th, 2004, and after an unexpected oil spill, on the following days: 09/19, 10/03, and 10/13/2004. We observed that the spill caused a distinct shift in both diatom composition and guild group. Diversity decreased and pollution-tolerant diatoms of the motile group became dominant in response to the elevated nutrient levels and reduced light....

Growth forms of Parietariadebilis (Urticaceae) and Veronica persica (Plantaginaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Dellaferrera,Ignacio M; Panigo,Elisa S; Vegetti,Abelardo C; Perreta,Mariel G.
This work analyzes growth forms in V. persica and P. debilis, in order to identify their structural development under undisturbed conditions. Temporal and spatial variation in branching system, structural and developmental features as well as growth direction and foliar sequence were studied in plants grown from seed in growth rooms and in plants collected in the field. In both species, the main axis and the basal branches behave similarly, so they may be considered equivalent structures. All structures produced form a synflorescence. Along the main axis and the basal paraclades of V.persica, a basal branching zone and an inhibition zone was observed with opposite phylotaxis. At the end of axes a flower production zone of alternate phyllotaxis was found....
