Diversity of metaxylem vessel elements in three Syagrus palms (Arecaceae) of different habits Acta Botanica
Pace,Marcelo Rodrigo; Botânico,Marli Pereira; Angyalossy,Veronica.
Vessel elements in Monocotyledons present morphological differences according to the organ where they occur. Usually such diff erences have been explained from an evolutionary perspective, with few data on how the vessel elements could be infl uenced by the diff erent functions of organs and the growth habits of the plants. To address this question, three vegetative organs of palms of the same genus, Syagrus, growing in similar environments, but with different habits, were analyzed. Accordingly, we aimed to detect whether the vessel elements would present similar features in all species or whether the vessel elements would change according to their different habits. We found that the width and type of perforation plates varied in the same way among all...

Nutritional quality of phaseolin types and morphotypes of green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Agrociencia
Carović-Stanko,Klaudija; Maloić,Mario; Pintar,Jasna; Liber,Zlatko; Radosavljević,Ivan; Bedeković,Dalibor; Guberac,Sunčica; Očić,Vesna; Lazarević,Boris.
Abstract The long tradition of green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation in Croatia has resulted in the development of a landraces adapted to specific areas and chosen to suit different dietary habits. The hypothesis of our study was that nutritional quality (content of proteins, sugars, fibres, calcium, potassium and phosphorus in fresh pods) of 14 widely grown Croatian green bean accessions is affected by origin and morphotype. The analysed accessions were grown in non-replicated field plots where morphotypes were classified. The gene pool of adscription (Andean vs. Mesoamerican) of each accession was determined with the phaseolin marker, whereas nutritional quality traits were analysed according to standard analytical methods. The relationships...

Agronomic performance of mini-tomato hybrids from dwarf lines Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Finzi,Rafael Resende; Maciel,Gabriel Mascarenhas; Silva,Ernani Clarete da; Luz,Jose Magno Queiroz; Borba,Monique Ellis Aguilar.
ABSTRACT Little is known about the commercial potential of mini-tomato hybrids obtained from one dwarf parent. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the agronomic performance of mini-tomato hybrids obtained by crossing a dwarf line (A) with normal lines with indeterminate (I), determinate (D) and semi-determinate (SD) growth habits. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Estação Experimental de Hortaliças at the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia-UFU in Monte Carmelo, Brazil. The experiment was completely randomized with 17 treatments and four repetitions. The genetic material consisted of 16 experimental mini-tomato hybrids from the tomato germplasm bank at UFU, and a commercial hybrid (Mascot) as a control. The following variables were used to...

Genotypic variability in seed accumulation of foliar-applied molybdenum to common bean Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Vieira,Rogério Faria; Paula Júnior,Trazilbo José de; Carneiro,José Eustáquio de Souza; Queiroz,Marina Viana.
The genotypic variability in molybdenum (Mo) accumulation in common bean seeds has been demonstrated in cases in which soil is the main Mo source, but this variability is yet unknown when Mo is foliar-applied. Therefore, seed Mo concentrations (SMoCc) and seed Mo contents (SMoCt) of 12 genotypes were determined in four experiments in the Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in which plants were sprayed with 600 g ha-1 Mo. For comparison, two additional experiments without external Mo were conducted. Without Mo application, the average SMoCc was undetectable or 2.83 µg g-1, without significant differences among genotypes. On average, with Mo applications, SMoCc ranged from 14.7 to 25.0 µg g-1 and SMoCt, from 3.94 to 6.84 µg. 'Majestoso' was among the...

Leaf area of common bean genotypes during early pod filling as related to plant adaptation to limited phosphorus supply Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Trindade,Roberto Santos; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Low phosphorus supply markedly limits leaf growth and genotypes able to maintain adequate leaf area at low P could adapt better to limited-P conditions. This work aimed to investigate the relationship between leaf area production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) genotypes during early pod filling and plant adaptation to limited P supply. Twenty-four genotypes, comprised of the four growth habits in the species and two weedy accessions, were grown at two P level applied to the soil (20 and 80 mg kg-1) in 4 kg pots and harvested at two growth stages (pod setting and early pod filling). High P level markedly increased the leaf number and leaf size (leaf area per leaf), slightly increased specific leaf area but did not affect the net assimilation rate. At...

Variability of root traits in common bean genotypes at different levels of phosphorus supply and ontogenetic stages Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Trindade,Roberto dos Santos; Araújo,Adelson Paulo.
Selection of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars with enhanced root growth would be a strategy for increasing P uptake and grain yield in tropical soils, but the strong plasticity of root traits may compromise their inclusion in breeding programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the magnitude of the genotypic variability of root traits in common bean plants at two ontogenetic stages and two soil P levels. Twenty-four common bean genotypes, comprising the four growth habits that exist in the species and two wild genotypes, were grown in 4 kg pots at two levels of applied P (20 and 80 mg kg-1) and harvested at the stages of pod setting and early pod filling. Root area and root length were measured by digital image analysis. Significant...
