Coastal habitat alterations such as the loss of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) and hardening of shorelines could have cumulative effects on valuable fishery resources. To investigate this effect, we developed a multiscale modeling framework for blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Areal coverage of shoreline land cover and SAV for Mobile Bay, Alabama, were combined with information from small-scale biological studies and long-term, large-scale commercial fishery data to model the potential effects of marginal habitat losses on the blue crab fishery. We applied stochastic variation in annual recruitment to the fishery to estimate probabilities for sustainable harvests under scenarios of habitat loss. The simulations suggested...

Spatial Dynamics of Sea Turtle Abundance and Shrimping Intensity in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Ecology and Society
McDaniel, Carrie J; Duke University Marine Laboratory; cjmcdaniel@hotmail.com; Crowder, Larry B; Duke University Marine Laboratory; lcrowder@duke.edu; Priddy, Jeffery A; Duke University Marine Laboratory; jpriddy@duke.edu.
In order to examine the scientific feasibility of area closures for sea turtle protection, we determined the spatial dynamics of sea turtles for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico by analyzing National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) aerial survey data in September, October, and November of 1992, 1993, and 1994. Turtle sightings were grouped into depth zones and NMFS fishery statistical zones, and strip transect methods were used to estimate the relative abundance of sea turtles in each subzone. Average shrimping intensity was calculated for each subzone for all months of 1992, 1993, and 1994, as well as for the months and locations of the aerial survey. The spatial overlap of sea turtle abundance and shrimping intensity suggested regions where interactions are...

Laurentide Ice Sheet meltwater and abrupt climate change during the last glaciation ArchiMer
Hill, Hw; Flower, Bp; Quinn, Tm; Hollander, Dj; Guilderson, Tp.
A leading hypothesis to explain abrupt climate change during the last glacial cycle calls on fluctuations in the margin of the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet ( LIS), which may have routed fresh water between the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the North Atlantic, affecting North Atlantic Deep Water variability and regional climate. Paired measurements of delta O-18 and Mg/Ca of foraminiferal calcite from GOM sediments reveal five episodes of LIS meltwater input from 28 to 45 thousand years ago (ka) that do not match the millennial-scale Dansgaard-Oeschger warmings recorded in Greenland ice. We suggest that summer melting of the LIS may occur during Antarctic warming and likely contributed to sea level variability during marine isotope stage 3.

We establish the cyst-theca relationship of the dinoflagellate cyst species Trinovantedinium pallidifulvum Matsuoka 1987 based on germination experiments of specimens isolated from the Gulf of Mexico. We show that the motile stage is a new species, designated as Protoperidinium louisianensis. We also determine its phylogenetic position based on single-cell polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a single cell germinated from the Gulf of Mexico cysts. To further refine the phylogeny, we determined the large subunit (LSU) sequence through single-cell PCR of the cyst Selenopemphix undulata isolated from Brentwood Bay (Saanich Inlet, BC, Canada). The phylogeny shows that P. louisianensis is closest to P. shanghaiense, the motile stage of T. applanatum, and is...

An early Pleistocene Mg/Ca-δ18O record from the Gulf of Mexico: Evaluating ice sheet size and pacing in the 41-kyr world ArchiMer
Shakun, Jeremy D.; Raymo, Maureen E.; Lea, David W..
Early Pleistocene glacial cycles in marine O-18 exhibit strong obliquity pacing, but there is a perplexing lack of precession variability despite its important influence on summer insolation intensity - the presumed forcing of ice sheet growth and decay according to the Milankovitch hypothesis. This puzzle has been explained in two ways: Northern Hemisphere ice sheets instead respond to insolation integrated over the summer, which is mostly controlled by obliquity, or anti-phased precession-driven variability in ice volume between the hemispheres cancels out in global O-18, leaving the in-phase obliquity signal to dominate. We evaluated these ideas by reconstructing Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) meltwater discharge to the Gulf of Mexico from 2.55-1.70Ma using...

Heterogeneous energetic pathways and carbon sources on deep eastern Mediterranean cold seep communities ArchiMer
Carlier, Antoine; Ritt, Benedicte; Rodrigues, Clara F.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Olu, Karine; Grall, Jacques; Clavier, Jacques.
Cold seep communities in the Mediterranean Sea have only been discovered two decades ago, and their trophic ecology has been the subject of very few studies. We investigated the benthic food web of two deep chemosynthesis-based ecosystems on the Napoli and Amsterdam mud volcanoes (MVs) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (similar to 2,000 m depth). Seeping methane has been detected at the surface of both MVs during pioneering cruises and has been hypothesised to be assimilated by benthic fauna as observed in other oceans' margins. Given the extreme oligotrophic character of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, we a priori expected that chemosynthetic food sources, especially methane-derived carbon (MDC), played a major trophic role in these deep seep communities...

Societal concerns over the potential impacts of recent global change have prompted renewed interest in the long term ecological monitoring of large ecosystems The deep sea is the largest ecosystem on the planet the least accessible and perhaps the least understood Nevertheless deep sea data collected over the last few decades are now being synthesised with a view to both measuring global change and predicting the future impacts of further rises in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations For many years it was assumed by many that the deep sea is a stable habitat buffered from short term changes in the atmosphere or upper ocean However recent studies suggest that deep seafloor ecosystems may respond relatively quickly to seasonal inter annual and decadal...

A new species of hesionid worm, Hesiocaeca methanicola sp nov (Polychaeta : Hesionidae), living in ice-like methane hydrates in the deep Gulf of Mexico ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Daniel; Toulmond, André.
On July 14, 1997, in the Gulf of Mexico, a dense population of polychaete worms dwelling in methane hydrates associated with cold seeps was discovered and sampled at 538 meters depth. The worms belong to the family Hesionidae and represent a new species of the genus Hesiocaeca. They differ from the two previously described species by the shape of the prostomium, the shape of the setae and the presence of anal cirri.

The Vertical structure of a Loop Current Eddy ArchiMer
Meunier, T.; Pallas-sanz, E.; Tenreiro, M.; Portela, E.; Ochoa, J.; Ruiz-angulo, A.; Cusi, S..
The vertical structure of a recently detached Loop Current Eddy (LCE) is studied using in‐situ data collected with an underwater glider from August to November 2016. Altimetry and Argo data are analysed to discuss the context of the eddy shedding and evolution as well as the origin and transformation of its thermohaline properties. the LCE appeared as a large body of nearly homogeneous water between 50 and 250 m confined between the seasonal and main thermoclines. A temperature anomaly relative to surrounding Gulf's water of up to 9.7 °C was observed within the eddy core. The salinity structure had a double core pattern. The subsurface fresh core had a negative anomaly of 0.27 psu while the deeper saline core's positive anomaly reached 1.22 psu. Both...

Population Genetics of the Eastern Oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791) in the Gulf of Mexico ArchiMer
Varney, Robin L.; Galindo, Clara; Cruz, Pedro; Gaffney, Patrick M..
Genetic variation in eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) collected from 13 sites in the Gulf of Mexico was examined using a combination of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing, mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, and nuclear single nucleotide polymorphism analysis. Both mitochondrial and nuclear markers showed significant differentiation among samples. Combined with previous allozyme and microsatellite data, these results indicate considerable population subdivision throughout the Gulf of Mexico, despite the potentially homogenizing effect of larval dispersal.

Dynamique de la diversité fonctionnelle des communautés de poissons (lagune de Terminos, Mexique) ArchiMer
Villeger, Sébastien.
One of the main challenges in ecology is to understand how global changes affect biodiversity and what are the consequences on ecosystem functioning. In this perspective, the functional diversity of communities is a cornerstone since it allows linking environment, community structure and ecosystem properties. The aim of this thesis is thus to improve the understanding of functional diversity dynamic (i) in relation to natural variability of environmental conditions and (ii) under anthropogenic disturbances. As a first step we have developed a new methodological framework allowing to (1) describe fish functional niches based on functional traits, and (2) to quantify functional diversity within (α) and among (β) sites thanks to new indices....

Mississippi River discharge over the last similar to 560,000 years - Indications from X-ray fluorescence core-scanning ArchiMer
Kujau, Ariane; Nuernberg, Dirk; Zielhofer, Christoph; Bahr, Andre; Roehl, Ursula.
The long term history of terrigenous flux to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River is hardly known. We here present geochemical and sedimentological data to approximate the varying Mississippi River sediment influx into the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) over the last six glacial-interglacial cycles (MIS 1 to 14). Our study is based on the IMAGES sediment core MD02-2576 that was recovered from the DeSoto Canyon and is located similar to 200 km south to the recent Mississippi River delta and similar to 150 km east of the recent coastline of Florida. Concentrations of siliciclastic elements in bulk sediment samples were estimated from XRF scanning and calibrated by single bulk XRF-analyses. Elemental ratios of the sedimentary record correspond to...

Intrathermocline Eddies Embedded within an Anticyclonic Vortex Ring ArchiMer
Meunier, Thomas; Tenreiro, M.; Pallas-sanz, Enric; Ochoa, Jose; Ruiz-angulo, Angel; Portela, Esther; Cusi, Simo; Damien, Pierre; Carton, Xavier.
High‐resolution hydrographic measurements reveal the presence of three Intra‐Thermocline Eddies (ITEs) embedded within a Loop Current Eddy (LCE). ITEs are lenticular bodies of nearly homogeneous water which contrasts with the well stratified surrounding water. Their radii and thickness ranged between [19‐32] km and [150‐250] m. Negative relative vorticity within their cores (down to ‐0.85 times the Coriolis frequency), along with a large negative stratification anomaly, result in low Ertel Potential Vorticity (PV) and intense negative Ertel Potential Vorticity Anomalies (PVA). Vortex stretching and relative vorticity have comparable contributions to PVA, resulting in Burger numbers of order unity. The similarity of thermohaline properties within the ITE's...

Diversity and composition of macrobenthic community associated with sandy shoals of the Louisiana continental shelf ArchiMer
Dubois, Stanislas; Gelpi, Carey; Condrey, Richard E.; Grippo, Mark A.; Fleeger, John W..
Along the Louisiana, USA continental shelf, sandy shoals are shallow, possibly oxygen-rich "islands" surrounded by deeper muddy deposits prone to hypoxia. Shoals also contain significant quantities of fine sand that may be mined in the future for coastal restoration. The ecological role of shoals remains poorly understood and we hypothesized that shoals provide critical habitat for benthic invertebrates. Using Ship Shoal as a model system, we assessed the diversity and structure of macrobenthic assemblages and how community structure varies with season and environmental parameters. High biomass (averaging 26.7 g m(-2)) and high diversity (161 species) of macrobenthos was found in 2006. Polychaetes (45%-72 species) and crustaceans comprised most of the...

Intraspecific variation in preserved specimens of the fiddler crabs Uca panacea and Uca pugilator (Decapoda: Ocypodidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bezerra,Luis E. A.; Coelho,Petrônio A..
The fiddler crabs Uca panacea Novak & Salmon, 1974 and Uca pugilator (Bosc, 1802) are closely related North American species that are sympatric along the north coast of Gulf of Mexico. Since U. panacea was described, there has been confusion in the identification these two species. Morphological differences between these two fiddlers have been pointed out in recent years, mainly regarding the presence of a pigment spot and granulations on the dorsal margin of carapace in U. pugilator. We report herein some intraspecific differences between the two species that we believe to be useful in avoiding misidentification among preserved specimens of these two fiddler crabs, such as the absence of the pigment spot in U. pugilator and the presence of the...

POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CYANOBACTERIA IN OYSTER BANKS OF TÉRMINOS LAGOON, SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO Acta biol.Colomb.
POOT-DELGADO,Carlos Antonio; OKOLODKOV,Yuri B.; AKÉ-CASTILLO,José Antolin; RENDÓN von OSTEN.,Jaime.
ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria inhabit hypersaline, marine and freshwater environments. Some toxic and non-toxic species can form harmful blooms. The aim of this study was to identify potentially harmful cyanobacterial species in the oyster banks of Términos Lagoon, the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Six sample sites (up to 2-m depth) were monitored monthly from August 2012 to September 2013. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen saturation (% DO), inorganic nutrients and abundance of cyanobacteria were determined. Temperature and salinity were characterized by marked seasonal differences (26.8 to 30.6 °C and 6.1 to 19.5, respectively). The pH values (ranging from 7.1 to 8.4) and the % DO (88.4 to 118.2 %) suggest a predominance of photosynthetic...

Pycnogonida of Mexican waters: A checklist with observations on diversity and ecology Boletín de Investigaciones
Ramírez-Tello,Luis Miguel; Tello-Musi,José Luis; López-García,Roberto.
ABSTRACT This work is an updated checklist of Mexican Pycnogonida species for both oceans, the Mexican Pacific (PA) and the Gulf of Mexico (GMx). This research was carried out based on the first historical records by Schimkewitsch in 1893 up to the present day. The number of recorded species increased in this study. The total number of species in Mexican oceans is 58, distributed among 19 genera and 10 families. All records were cross-referenced with the original literature, and those found to be questionable were deleted from the checklist. With the data reported in this checklist, an extrapolation of the total number of species was performed using rarefaction curves, thus demonstrating that the recorded species fell well below the projected diversity....
