Molecular and taxonomic characterisation of introduced specimens of Poecilia reticulata in the lower Paraguay River basin (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosso,Juan J.; Rosso,Franco del; Mabragaña,Ezequiel; Schenone,Nahuel F.; Avigliano,Esteban; Astarloa,Juan M. Díaz de.
ABSTRACT Poeciliids comprise around 300 species inhabiting the fresh and brackish waters of the Americas and Africa. Poecilia reticulata is native to Northeastern South America and Trinidad and Tobago. In this paper, introduced specimens of P. reticulata collected in the lower Paraguay River in Argentina, were characterized by means of molecular and taxonomic approaches. We further explore, by means of DNA Barcoding, the singularity of the genetic identity of these specimens. Ocurrence of P. reticulata in the lower Paraguay River represents the first record of this species in Argentina. Thirteen individuals of P. reticulata were collected. DNA barcoding showed that all five specimens sampled belong to a single mitochondrial lineage, which was also present...

Morphologic analysis of developmental phases and gill ontogenesis in neotropical species Poecilia vivipara (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) exposed to different salinities Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rocha,Thiago L.; Carvalho,Rodolfo; Yamada,Áureo T.; Sabóia-Morais,Simone M. T..
The present study evaluated and characterized the different phases of development and the cell types present in the gill epithelium of embryos, larvae, and fingerlings of guppy (Poecilia vivipara Bloch & Schneider, 1801) specimens exposed to water with salinity ranging from 0‰ to 20‰. The development of P. vivipara was classified into eight phases. The yolk was intensely eosinophilic, with glycidic and lipidic components between phases 1 to 7. After the development of their branchial epithelium, the presence of pavement cells, mitochondria-rich cells, and mucous cells (MCs) was observed. The understanding of ontogenesis indicates the sequence of cellular origin. Only type IV MCs located in the gill rays was detected from phase 3 through phase 7....

Influence of environmental integrity on feeding, condition and reproduction of Phalloceros harpagos Lucinda, 2008 in the Tarumã stream micro-basin Biological Sciences
Monaco, Isabelle de Almeida; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul; Súarez, Yzel Rondon; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul; Lima-Junior, Sidnei Eduardo; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul.
With the objective of evaluating the influence of the environmental integrity on feeding, condition factor and reproduction of Phalloceros harpagos, the species biology was analyzed in the Tarumã Stream micro-basin, Naviraí, Mato Grosso do Sul State (upper Paraná river). Samples were collected from 2007 to 2010, and biometric data of specimens was registered. Stomach and gonad were taken for the analysis of feeding and reproduction, respectively. The species is detritivore, showing a high flexibility in the diet. Debris and sediment, followed by plant and algae were the most ingested items. As for the condition factor, no definite pattern was observed in the values for both sexes, probably because the species has a long reproductive period. The frequency...
