Prevalence of HBV genotypes in South American immigrants affected by HBV-related chronic active hepatitis BJID
Palumbo,Emilio; Scotto,Gaetano; Faleo,Giuseppina; Cibelli,Donatella Concetta; Angarano,Gioacchino.
This study evaluated the prevalence of HBV infection in a population of South American immigrants in Italy and to determine in patients with detectable serum HBV-DNA the HBVgenotypes. Between April 2005 and April 2006 a total of 130 South American immigrants were tested for HBsAg. In HBsAg positive patients the biochemical and virological activity of infection and the possible presence of co-infections (HCV, HDV, HIV) were evaluated. In patients with detectable serum HBV DNA, the HBV genotype was determined by INNOLiPA. Among the 130 subjects tested, 14 (10.7%) resulted HBsAg positive. All were men, with a mean age of 22 years (range 19-37) and 12 (85.7 %) came from Brazil, while 2 (14.3%) came from Ecuador. All patients infected by HBV had elevated...

Hepatitis B virus genotyping in chronic hepatitis B patients in southwestern Saudi Arabia BJID
Asaad,Ahmed Morad; Al-Ayed,Mohamed Saeed Zayed; Aleraky,Mohamed; Qureshi,Mohamed Ansar.
ABSTRACTThe distribution of hepatitis B virus genotypes in Saudi Arabia is largely unknown. To the best of our knowledge there are no data available about HBV genotypes in southwestern region of the country. This study aimed to determine the epidemiologic distribution of hepatitis B virus genotypes in chronic hepatitis B patients in southwestern region, and to verify possible correlations between these genotypes and the clinical symptoms. A total of 160 patients with chronic hepatitis B infection were enrolled in this study. Sera were tested for liver function tests, hepatitis B virus markers and DNA load by standard procedures. HBV genotyping was performed by 2-tube nested PCR for determination of six genotypes (A-F). Genotype D was the most common, found...

HBV epidemiology and genetic diversity in an area of high prevalence of hepatitis B in southern Brazil BJID
Paoli,Juliana de; Wortmann,André Castagna; Klein,Mirelli Gabardo; Pereira,Vagner Reinaldo Zingalli Bueno; Cirolini,Adriana Maria; Godoy,Bibiane Armiliato de; Fagundes,Nelson Jurandi Rosa; Wolf,Jonas Michel; Lunge,Vagner Ricardo; Simon,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem in Brazil. HBV endemicity is usually moderate to low according to geographic regions, and high prevalence of this virus has been reported in people of some specific Brazilian counties, including those with a strong influence of Italian colonization in southern Brazil. Analysis of HBV diversity and identification of the main risk factors to HBV infection are necessary to understand hepatitis B epidemiology in these high prevalence regions in southern Brazil. Objective To investigate epidemiological characteristics and HBV genotypes and subgenotypes circulating in a specific city with high HBV prevalence. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed with 102 HBV...
