APPARENT DENSITY AS AN ESTIMATOR OF WOOD PROPERTIES OBTAINED IN TESTS WHERE FAILURE IS FRAGILE REA
Christoforo,André L.; Couto,Natalia G.; Almeida,João P. B.; Aquino,Vinicius B. de M.; Lahr,Francisco A. R..
ABSTRACT The use of new wood species in construction requires knowledge of their properties for safer and more economical structural sizing. In Brazil, structural projects are carried out according to the standard document ABNT NBR 7190:1997. Tests required by this standard for the complete characterization of species require large machines with high costs, which are present only in large research centers. Considering the lack of experimental determination, this study aimed, with the help of analysis of variance of regression models, to investigate the possibility of estimating, through apparent density, wood properties obtained in tests where failure is considered fragile, allowing the estimation of properties of species still little used. Ten wood...

INFLUENCE OF EXPOSURE TIME TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE ON SHEAR STRENGTH OF WOOD USED IN ROOF STRUCTURES REA
Christoforo,André L.; Almeida,Tiago H. de; Almeida,Diego H. de; Balanco,Giovana G.; Lahr,Francisco A. R..
ABSTRACT Wood is one of the main materials used in the constructing of covering structures (roofs) because of its versatility. Under this situation, due to solar radiation incidence, the temperature can exceed 60 °C and, such as other environmental conditions, influence the mechanical properties of the wood in use. The aim of this research was to study the influence of exposure time of the wood of four different hardwood species at a temperature of 60 °C on the shear strength parallel to fibers. The wood of the following species was used: Cupiúba (Goupia glabra), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus saligna), Garapeira (Apuleia leiocarpa), and Jatobá Tamarindo (Hymenaea sp.). In order to investigate the effect of exposure time (0, 168, 456, 720, and 2160 hours) of the...

Salisapiliaceae – a new family of oomycetes from marsh grass litter of southeastern North America Naturalis
Hulvey, J.; Telle, S.; Nigrelli, L.; Lamour, K.; Thines, M..
Leptographium spp. are anamorphs of Grosmannia residing in the order Ophiostomatales. These fungi are typically associated with bark-beetles and are common causal agents of sapstain in lumber and some are important tree pathogens. In this study, Leptographium spp. associated with bark beetles collected during a survey in Jilin and Yunnan provinces of China, were identified. Identifications were achieved using comparisons of morphological characters and DNA sequence data for the ITS2-partial LSU rDNA region, as well as the β-tubulin and EF-1α gene regions. Eight unknown species of Leptographium are recognised and described from conifer and hardwood hosts, associated with beetles including Ips subelongatus, Tomicus yunnanensis, Hylurgops minor, Polygraphus...

Anatomical changes in Willow Wood Decayed by the brown rot fungus Coriolellus malicola (Basidiomycota) Boletín de la Sociedad
Murace,Mónica A.; Luna,María L.; Keil,Gabriel D.; De Cristófano,Natalia N..
In Argentina, Salix wood is employed mainly in pulp and paper industry. In this country, the brown rotter C oriolellus malicola was found in association with willow plantations. The purpose of this work was to study the anatomical changes caused by C. malicola in willow wood in order to provide information on the effects of brown rot decay in the yield and quality of pulp. Two willow clones were employed: Salix nigra 4 and Salix babylonica x Salix alba cv I 131-25 . Two exposure times were used: 75 and 150 days. The percentages of weight loss produced by this fungus in both clones was ca. 30% at 75 days and ca. 60% at 150 days of decay. C. malicola degraded mainly fibre walls. Microscopically, the loss of cell shape, the presence of transwall fractures and...
