Waterfowl harvest management in North America, for all its success, historically has had several shortcomings, including a lack of well-defined objectives, a failure to account for uncertain management outcomes, and inefficient use of harvest regulations to understand the effects of management. To address these and other concerns, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began implementation of adaptive harvest management in 1995. Harvest policies are now developed using a Markov decision process in which there is an explicit accounting for uncontrolled environmental variation, partial controllability of harvest, and structural uncertainty in waterfowl population dynamics. The Taimyr wild reindeer herd, i.e., caribou (Rangifer tarandus), is one of the most important wildlife resources in the Russian Far North and may constitute the largest migratory Rangifer herd in the world. Over the last 60 years the herd has undergone a recovery from low numbers in the 1940s, reaching high densities by 1970 that concerned wildlife managers and domestic husbandry herds, with an 11.7% annual growth rate. At that time an aggressive commercial harvest of the herd was implemented, and organized wolf control was initiated with the goal of stabilizing herd numbers and injecting needed economic activity into the region. Unsustainable exploitation of wild animals is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity and to millions of people depending on wild meat for food and income. ABSTRACT Operational conditions of mechanized harvesting can affect the quality of harvested sugarcane. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of the displacement speed and cutting height on the quality of the raw material during the mechanized harvest of sugarcane. Vegetable losses were accounted for in the field by manual collection of the fractions left after harvest. Vegetable and mineral impurities were determined at the processing stage in the laboratory. Both the displacement speed and cutting height did not affect vegetable losses. However, the increase in vegetal impurities occurred at higher displacement speeds, whereas lower cutting heights resulted in higher amounts of mineral impurities. |
