Enrichment of culture media with amino acids improves embryo development. However, little is known about the specific action of each amino acid during embryogenesis. The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of L-glutamine (Gln) and tryptophan (Trp) on mouse embryo hatching, expansion and viability in vitro. Blastocysts were collected from 6- to 8-week-old female BALB/c mice (N = 30) and cultured in M2 medium containing either 0.125, 0.25 or 0.5 mM Trp, 1 mM Gln, or M2 alone. Gln significantly increased (100%; P < 0.05) blastocyst hatching at 24 h compared to M2 alone or Trp; moreover, Trp inhibited blastocyst hatching when compared to M2 alone (P < 0.05) at 72 h. In contrast, the percentage of embryos reaching the state of expanded... |

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of a diet containing canthaxanthin and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) on the production and reproductive performances of Cobb 500 broiler breeders aged 53 to 61 weeks. The study included 36,000 Cobb 500 female and 3,600 male broiler breeders aging 51 weeks. The birds were housed in three poultry houses divided into four plots, totaling 12 experimental units each containing 3,000 females and 300 males. The birds received the following treatments: control diet (without the studied additives) or the control diet with the addition of 60mg kg-1feed of 25-(OH)-D3 and canthaxanthin feed (6mg of canthaxanthin and 2,760,000IU of 25-(OH)-D3 per kg of feed) per the supplier's recommendations. The... |

The survival of turbot eggs and the rearing capacities of larvae stemmed from artificial fertilization practices using frozen-thawed spermatozoa were evaluated. Furthermore, the viability of sperm samples stored during a 9 month period in liquid nitrogen was assessed. No significant difference in the fertilization rate, hatching rate, survival and wet weight of 10-day old larvae were observed using fresh or frozen-thawed spermatozoa. The motility recorded at 10 s and 60 s post-activation and the fertilization capacity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were not significantly decreased during a 9 month storage period in liquid nitrogen. These results confirm the high quality of the turbot spermatozoa stemmed from the cryopreservation process, allowing their use... |

Long-term monitoring of zooplankton and temperature has been carried out at the nuclear power station of Flamanville (west coast of Cotentin, English Channel, France) since 1977. Zooplankton sampling and temperature measurements took place at fortnightly intervals, particularly during the spring and summer. In addition, daily records of water temperature were recorded since 1986. The seasonal appearance of Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 first stage zoeae in the plankton outside the thermal plume near to the power station can greatly vary from year-to-year. Earliest observations have occurred in early June whilst latest observations were made at the end of July. During the period of study, temperature records display a warming trend whilst hatching is... |

ABSTRACT Laboratory breeding of annual fish is often impaired when fish fail to inflate the swim bladder after hatching. These fish, which are known as belly-sliders, cannot swim in the water column, moving mainly on the bottom of water. Therefore, we wanted to understand the factors underlying failed inflation of swim bladder in the annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus and determine the implications of this condition on the growth of juveniles. To identify how the initial filling of the gaseous vesicle is compromised, and to determine the implications of this condition on juvenile growth, we analysed the histology of the swim bladder of both normal swimming fish and belly-sliders during their initial growth phase (first month of life). In addition to... |
