In this study, some important physical and mechanical properties of the hawthorn and the effect of moisture on them were investigated. The effect of moisture at two levels (64.01% and 70.1%, w.b.) on the geometric dimensions (length, width, thickness, arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, degree of sphericity, surface area, projected area, criteria projected area, mass, volume and the apparent), true density, porosity, coefficient of static friction and coefficient of rolling on three levels (wood, glass and galvanized) and mechanical properties obtained by impact testing machine using a randomized factorial design was evaluated by software SPSS18. Hawthorn, from Rosaceae family, is one of the important forest fruits which there are different species in Iran. In this study, some characteristics of hawthorn fruit (Crataegus pontica), including physical properties (fruit length, width, thickness, geometric, arithmetic and equivalent mean diameter, surface area, sphericity, aspect ratio, thousand fruit mass and true density) and nutritional properties (total dry matter, total soluble solid, titratable acidity and moisture content) were considered. Results showed that average of fruit length, width and thickness were 1.53 mm, 1.95 mm and 1.78 mm, respectively. ABSTRACT Hawthorn extract has been used for ameliorating cardiac disorders and pulmonary hypertension. Flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins are considered to be responsible for the positive health effects of hawthorn extract. The effect of Hawthorn extract in the water supply on feed intake, growth, carcass traits, internal organ weight, cardiac indices, the concentration of serum proteins and the incidence of pulmonary hypertension syndrome was evaluated in broiler chickens.
