Pharmaceutical services and health promotion: how far have we gone and how are we faring? Scientific output in pharmaceutical studies BJPS

The objective of this study was to investigate the scientific output on health promotion within the pharmaceutical field and its relation with the development of pharmaceutical services within health systems. A comprehensive review of published scientific articles from the Medline and Lilacs databases was carried out. The review comprised articles published until December 2011, and used combinations of the terms 'health promotion' or 'health education' and 'pharmacy', 'pharmacist' or 'pharmaceutical'. The articles were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The use of drugs during pregnancy still represents a challenge for medicine, since the majority of drugs cross the placental barrier with a potential to cause several congenital problems to the fetus, and most of them have not been clinically tested in pregnant patients. At the same time, the medicalization phenomenon, self-medication, and lack of patient information about the misuse of medicines are additional problems. Evaluation of the use of topic nasal decongestants in university students from health sciences courses BJPS

Nasal decongestants in Brazil are available without prescription. They are one of the most requested medications in Brazil. The use of nasal decongestants, however, may lead to serious consequences. For this study, university students majoring in the health field were evaluated in terms of their profile regarding the use of nasal decongestants. Additionally, health sciences seniors were evaluated regarding their level of knowledge concerning the correct and proper use of nasal decongestants. Among the 71.8% of respondents who had already used topic nasal decongestants, 64.3% had used this medication for at least 15 days and 64.6% had started using it due to nasal obstruction.
