Hedonic Price Analysis of Thoroughbred Broodmares in Foal AgEcon

Thoroughbred broodmares are the foundation of a successful racing operation. This study estimated the impact of breeding, racing, and market characteristics on broodmare auction prices. Data represent 604 in-foal broodmares sold in Keeneland’s 2005 sale. Prices were highly responsive to the sire’s stud fee, the broodmare’s age, and progeny performance in graded stakes races, with pronounced day-of-sale effects. The stud fee marginal value was substantially lower than one break-even estimate, suggesting possible disincentives for investment in stallion services. Out-of-sample forecasts were far superior to naïve forecasts but were not accurate enough to use in isolation from other decision aids.

Overall valuation structure appeared similar to Neibergs' results using the 1996 data. Out-of-sample forecasts were far superior to naive forecasts, but were not accurate enough to use in isolation from other decision aids such as visual inspection of the horse.

Price Determinants in Top Quality E-Auctioned Specialty Coffees AgEcon

The US specialty coffee industry has grown from $1 billion in 1990 to $11 billion in 2006 and is expected to continue to grow into the foreseeable future. This growth particularly depends on prices coordinating the specialty coffee supply chain through two-way information exchange between roasters and producers. We analyze the determinants of specialty coffee prices by estimating a hedonic price function for specialty Central and South American coffees traded at e-auctions. We hypothesize that since specialty coffee is a differentiated product, prices will be determined by both sensory and reputation attributes. Crop breeding has contributed much towards assuring the supply of high quality food for a rapidly growing world population. Crop breeding has, however, been focused on only a relatively small number of species and many more have been neglected. In this paper we report on our contributions to a multidisciplinary research project that aims at improving ricebean (Vigna umbellata) – an orphan pulse crop in India and Nepal – and at introducing improved ricebean into local and regional markets. The Ricebean has always been a traditional pulse in India and Nepal. A Hedonic Price Analysis of Corn and Soybean Herbicides AgEcon

Herbicides account for approximately 2.2% of total farm expenses and are applied to more than 80% of farmland in the USA. The widespread adoption of herbicides contributed to the increased and relatively cheaper productivity of modern intensively managed agricultural systems in developed countries. The present study uses a hedonic framework to analyze the effect of selected attributes on the price of corn and soybean herbicides. Two different empirical models were estimated separately for the two crops. The data include information on 51 herbicides, 27 for corn and 24 for soybean crops used in Kentucky. AN AUTOMATED ECONOMETRIC APPROACH FOR ESTIMATING AND REPORTING DAILY COTTON MARKET PRICES AgEcon

An automated price reporting system developed through computer technology and hedonic price theory is used to estimate daily cotton market prices, premiums, and discounts. This objective approach for reporting cotton market prices was developed to complement the objective measures of high volume instrument grading of cotton. The computerized, econometric system is limited to the Texas and Oklahoma marketing regions where sales are readily available from electronic markets. The econometric based system has shown all the characteristics of an efficient price reporting system; it is accurate, reliable, consistent, and repeatable in its working process and price estimates.

Quality Pricing in U.S. Soybean Exports AgEcon

This paper examines quality-price relationship in U.S. soybean exports. Implicit prices for quality characteristics of U.S. soybean exports were estimated using a hedonic price function from a rich transaction-specific data set to major destination markets to test the efficiency of the market in transmitting preferences for quality. The results of this analysis suggest that the price of soybean export shipments was not affected by the oil and protein content of the soybeans. Moisture content was surprisingly found to positively affect price while foreign material reduced price after the 1989-1990 marketing year. These results are discussed for their implications for existing, and proposed changes to existing, soybean market regulation.
