Factors that affect the use of herbicides in Philippine rice farming systems AgEcon

This study involves the application of a random-effects double-hurdle model to survey data to identify the farm-level factors affecting the adoption and intensity of herbicide use in rice production in the Philippines. Results broadly indicate apparent differences in the degree to which important explanatory variables affect the intensity and adoption decisions. The age of the farmer, household size, and irrigation are the significant predictors influencing the decision of farmers to use herbicides, while economic variables such as the price of herbicides, total income of farmers, and the use of bank loans or credit are the highly significant factors determining the intensity of herbicide use. Its importance is going to last or even increase in the coming years. That is why the rational and efficient utilisation of the inputs devoted to maize production is equally important from the point of view of the environment and the profit for the farmers. For analysing the question I have examined the production data of Hungarian FADN farms producing more than 5 hectares of maize during 2003-2006. This way taking the four years’ data I have concluded the analysis of 2982 individual and 761 corporate farms. For analysis purposes I have calculated the total direct cost spent on the production of 1 ton of grain maize and grouped the farms into 5 even groups according to this. FARM-LEVEL EFFECTS OF ADOPTING HERBICIDE-TOLERANT SOYBEANS IN THE U.S.A. AgEcon

This paper estimates the on-farm impacts of adopting herbicide-tolerant soybean on herbicide use, yields, and farm profits, using an econometric model that corrects for self-selection and simultaneity and is consistent with profit maximization. The model is estimated using nationwide farm-level survey data for 1997. Given that the use of herbicide-tolerant soybeans involves the substitution of a particular herbicide - primarily glyphosate - for other herbicides, we explicitly consider this substitution process in the model.
